Detailing the lives of the Dutton family in the early 20th century, 1923 adds another layer to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone saga.

The show arrives Sunday on Paramount+, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren leading the cast as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the owners of the Yellowstone ranch in 1923 Montana. Sheridan, who created Yellowstone and its prequel series 1883, also wrote this new series.

Ahead of the launch of the latest prequel, which will be two seasons long, here's a guide to the new characters.

Jacob Dutton - Harrison Ford

The patriarch of the Yellowstone Ranch, Jacob is the brother of James Dutton, the lead character in 1883.

James settled in Yellowstone after burying his daughter there, as seen in 1883, but somewhere down the line, set to be revealed in Episode 1, Jacob took over running the ranch from his brother.

Jacob is joined on the ranch by his wife Cara, nephew John and son Jack.

Cara Dutton - Helen Mirren

Jacob's wife and the family matriarch, Cara's Irish accent was revealed in a recent trailer for 1923. This character detail suggests she's a recent immigrant.

Speaking to Newsweek, Mirren described her character as "a queen" who is comparable to the other queens she's played in her career.

John Dutton Sr. - James Badge Dale

John Dutton Sr. returns in 1923 after we first met the character as a boy in 1883. Now well into his 40s, John is described by Paramount+ as the "right-hand man" to Jacob, his uncle.

According to Dutton family history, we know that John Dutton Sr. is the grandfather of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, whom we met in Yellowstone, the modern-day series.

Emma Dutton - Marley Shelton

Another member of the Dutton family who married into it, Emma is the wife of John and mother of their son, Jack.

Joking, Shelton told Newsweek joked that she's now "best friends" with Mirren after their characters spent so much time together on set at the Yellowstone ranch. During preparation for the show, each cast member went to a "cowboy camp," where Shelton says she excelled at herding cattle.

Jack Dutton - Darren Mann

Son of John and Emma and great-nephew to Jacob and Cara, Jack is a young but dedicated rancher, described as being "deeply loyal" to his family. He is John Dutton III's uncle.

Ahead of the launch of 1923, Mann told Newsweek that the prestige that comes from playing a Dutton isn't lost on him. "Yellowstone is huge. Taylor's really reinvented the Western and captured a massive audience."

He said that "to know that we're part of something with such a massive, loyal fan base is really special, and I'm really grateful for that.

Elizabeth Strafford - Michelle Randolph

A "feisty and capable woman," according to Paramount+, Elizabeth Strafford is engaged to Jack Dutton.

Not necessarily a rancher, Randolph still joined in at the cowboy camp to get acquainted with the cast.

"We bonded because we were all learning something new. We looked silly at first, and we were all quite sore after the first week, I'm not gonna lie. But it was so much fun and really special, and the wranglers were so patient with us," she told Newsweek.

Teonna - Aminah Nieves

Teonna is a young Native American woman attending a government residential boarding school with nuns. It's been suggested online that she is a descendant of Chief Thomas Rainwater in Yellowstone.

"This was something that my family has been going through since the beginning of time, and I own up to that, that it was a learning experience," Nieves told Newsweek when discussing her character's situation as a tribal woman attending the school.

Sister Mary O'Connor - Jennifer Ehle

The character is one of Teonna's teachers at the School for American Indians in Montana. Ehle admitted she wasn't aware of this part of Native American history before shooting began on 1923. "Certainly it was [an education] for me. It's the beginning of an education," she told Newsweek.
