In the season finale of the ABC show (streaming now on Hulu) Janine Teagues (played by creator Quinta Brunson) experienced a major upheaval in her life after she left boyfriend Tariq (Zack Fox) when he decided to move to New York.
With this setting up a potential relationship between Janine and fellow teacher Gregory (Tyler James Williams), fans are eagerly awaiting more episodes to see if the pair will get together.
Here's what we know so far about Abbott Elementary Season 2, including what Brunson has teased about the future of the show.
Will 'Abbott Elementary' Be Back for Season 2?

The ABC show will be back for another school year. Another season of Abbott Elementary is confirmed.
Abbott Elementary was confirmed for Season 2 in mid-March. The show got an early renewal after it became the joint first most watched comedy of the year among the 18-to-49 demographic (alongside Ghosts).
This renewal was announced via a "letter" from breakout character Principal Coleman (Janelle James), which read in part: "Faculty and Students (aka My Fans)—The camera crew I hired to showcase all that I've mad happen at ou beautiful school thinks I'm a star. I mean, are we surprised? No, we're not :). [sic]
"With that said, it is with great pleasure that I share they'll be returning for the 2022-2023 school year! That's right—Abbott Elementary Season Two is coming to a screen near you."
The exact release date of Abbott Elementary Season 2 has not been revealed, but the show is expected to be back at the start of the 2022-2023 TV season—that is, September 2022.
Asked what fans could respect from Season 2, Brunson told TV Line about Janine's journey: "I feel like this is a young woman who needs to know herself before she can know anyone else, whether that be Tariq again, some random guy [or] Gregory. She has to take her own kind of self love journey, and I think that's what we'll start to see with her. That doesn't sound romantic, but it can be very romantic."
Asked why she did not have Gregory and Janine get together in the current finale, she said: "It felt like it's too early in the series. In my head, I have an endgame for the entire show, every character. But say we wanted the room for that 'Will They/Won't They' to mean nothing maybe or later, I wanted the room to do that. That's why we ended it the way we did with Gregory on his own journey and Janine on her own journey."
Abbott Elementary is streaming now on Hulu.
