In Wednesday, the titular Addams Family member is breaking free of her famous family name and carving out a path all on her own.

While Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) is the lead of the new program, her parents Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán), and her brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) do make appearances throughout the show.

Even if the story is all about Wednesday there are plenty of Easter eggs for fans of The Addams Family to enjoy, according to co-creator Miles Millar, who spoke to Newsweek about the hidden things viewers may or may not notice.

All the 'Addams Family' Easter Eggs in 'Wednesday' You May Have Missed

Wednesday follows its titular character as she starts a new school year at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts and students with supernatural abilities like Wednesday. It was where her parents, Morticia and Gomez first met and fell in love.

1. The Famous 'Addams Family' snap

Early on during her time at Nevermore Academy, Wednesday discovers the location of a secret society known as the Nightshades.

To enter their domain, Wednesday must first crack a riddle that is hidden in plain sight as an inscription on a statue of poet Edgar Allan Poe. Wednesday solves it with ease and realizes that to get in one must snap their fingers twice.

Fans of The Addams Family will recognize that the two snaps are a direct reference to the original 1960s sitcom, which saw the characters snap their fingers twice during the theme song.

Miles Millar and co-creator Alfred Gough were keen to reference this iconic theme through the Nightshades as a way of explaining how it came to be.

"It's finding ways to include the iconic elements of The Addams Family but finding new ways to do it," Millar said of hiding Easter eggs in their show. "So, where was the origin of the snaps? We thought that was fun that it started in school and it led into the secret library. There are always finding interesting and dynamic ways that will [resonate].

"If you don't know The Addams Family, that means nothing to you, but if you're a fan of The Addams Family it'd be a nice little [Easter egg]. It'll hopefully bring a smile to your face and make you think 'Ah, that's interesting. That's where it comes from.' So it's always finding those moments throughout."

What is also interesting to note is that Jenna Ortega isn't the only Addams Family alum to snap her fingers, as Christina Ricci also does so in the show. Ricci played Wednesday in the '90s Addams Family films.

2. The Set Design is Key

Millar added that fans should pay attention to the set design on the show because the town of Jericho near Nevermore Academy has a number of hidden references and motifs to cartoonist Charles Addams' original work.

"A lot of those storefronts are based on the Charles Addams illustrations from The New Yorker, you'll see they're direct stores," he said.

"So, it's looking for those Easter eggs that we can plot in a show that the true fans of The Addams Family will appreciate, and people don't need to know. But it's nice that they're there for fans to find and discover."

3. Uncle Fester's Origins

Fred Armisen's Uncle Fester appears in Wednesday from episode 7 of the series. He's on the run for various crimes and has the ability to shoot lightning from his fingertips.

The character has quite confusing origins because depending on the adaptation he is either Morticia's uncle, as shown in the 1960s sitcom, or Gomez's brother, a story used from the 1970s onwards. He is only described as her biological uncle in the 1998 live-action series, The New Addams Family.

In Wednesday, Fester is revealed to be Wednesday's biological uncle on her father's side, so the Netflix show follows the character's origins from the more recent versions of the story.

Millar said of hiding Easter eggs in the series: "It's always about layering those things, we spend a lot of time thinking about what would you as a viewer enjoy if you're new to The Addams Family? And I think those things just add to the experience of watching it.

"It's always intriguing, now in the age of binge, to get the reactions immediately, and no one holds back what they think so it's going to be an interesting experience, very exciting," he added.

Wednesday is out on Netflix now.
