Is AI the Cure for Doctor Burnout? Tune Into Newsweek's Expert Discussion

Newsweek and Hospital for Special Surgery are convening a panel of experts to discuss one of health care's most pressing topics: Is AI the cure for doctor burnout?

On Tuesday, September 17, thought leaders will gather at Newsweek's global headquarters in One World Trade Center, New York City. The conversation will be livestreamed from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. EDT. We invite you to join our digital event by registering at this link.

Burnout recently hit its peak among health care workers. Last year, nearly half of doctors reported at least one symptom of the condition, according to the American Medical Association. Physician burnout is more than an industry issue—it's a public health concern. Research links detached, fatigued doctors to major medical errors.

The issue is poised to worsen. Burnout has contributed to a post-pandemic doctor exodus, and the Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that the U.S. will be short 139,000 physicians by 2033. For America's aging population, fewer doctors means more trouble.

Newsweek Horizons: Ai Burnout
AI has been touted as a potential solution to doctor burnout, but many physicians remain skeptical. IBTimes US

There is hope on the horizon. Generative artificial intelligence could unlock $1 trillion of improvement potential in the health care industry, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Novel AI technologies promise to lighten doctors' workloads by automating time-consuming administrative tasks. Theoretically, if AI could handle charts and records, doctors could spend more time on patient care.

But AI is still in its infancy. And while some physicians are leaning into the possibility, others are concerned about the unknowns. With so many stakeholders in the mix—investors, innovators, administrators, doctors—it can be challenging to cut through the noise and focus on the facts.

That's why Newsweek has assembled some of the brightest minds in both AI and doctor wellbeing for a focused, forward-looking conversation. On September 17, we'll dive into the promise and perils of these new technologies.

You'll hear directly from AI innovators and implementers at some of the nation's leading health care organizations.

Our expert panel includes Dr. Eric Williamson (Mayo Clinic, associate chair for radiology informatics and supervisor of the Radiology Artificial Intelligence Program), Dr. Ashley Beecy (NewYork-Presbyterian, medical director of artificial intelligence operations), Dr. Christine Sinsky (American Medical Association, vice president of professional satisfaction) and Dr. Pete Clardy (Google Health, senior clinical specialist), with introductory remarks from Dr. Chris DeRienzo (chief physician executive of the American Hospital Association).

We hope you'll tune in via livestream and continue the conversation in your own community.
