Burnout recently hit its peak among health care workers. Last year, nearly half of doctors reported at least one symptom of the condition, according to the American Medical Association. Physician burnout is more than an industry issue—it's a public health concern. Research links detached, fatigued doctors to major medical errors.
The issue is poised to worsen. Burnout has contributed to a post-pandemic doctor exodus, and the Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that the U.S. will be short 139,000 physicians by 2033. For America's aging population, fewer doctors means more trouble.
There is hope on the horizon. Generative artificial intelligence could unlock $1 trillion of improvement potential in the health care industry, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Novel AI technologies promise to lighten doctors' workloads by automating time-consuming administrative tasks. Theoretically, if AI could handle charts and records, doctors could spend more time on patient care.
But AI is still in its infancy. And while some physicians are leaning into the possibility, others are concerned about the unknowns. With so many stakeholders in the mix—investors, innovators, administrators, doctors—it can be challenging to cut through the noise and focus on the facts.
