After conservative commentator Ann Coulter declared former President Donald Trump's political reign in the Republican Party to be "done," some social media users compared her to a "rat" abandoning a "sinking ship."

In a recent podcast episode titled Trump's Done that Coulter tweeted out Tuesday, she said the segment of Americans that remain supportive of the former president does not reflect a nationwide pattern.

"Trump fans are having a lot of fun, but it isn't indicative of a movement that's sweeping the nation," she said on the podcast. "It's not the party of Trump. It's safe to come back, and it's safe for Republicans to stand up and run without Donald Trump."

Responding to an article about Coulter's comments, Twitter user @HazelEros wrote: "Oh my, the rats leaving the sinking ship?"

Trump has yet to officially announce whether he will seek re-election in 2024 after his loss to President Joe Biden in 2020. But even as the former president deals with the aftermath of the FBI's raid at his Mar-a-Lago home and the ongoing House committee investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, recent polls indicate that Trump would still be the top pick for Republican voters in the next election.

The podcast was not the first time Coulter—who once praised the former president in her 2016 book In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!—has criticized Trump.

In November of 2021, Coulter said that Trump was "abjectly stupid" and accused him of "betraying" his base over failing to follow through on his promise to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. While hundreds of miles of border wall was built, U.S. News reported, the project was not completed before Trump left office and Biden halted construction.

"I was well familiar with what a narcissistic, ridiculous, tacky, vulgar, arriviste this guy was," she said during an interview on Andrew Sullivan's Dishcast. "That I knew about. The one thing I underestimated, in fact, did not see at all, is, I had no idea how abjectly stupid the man is."

She also called Trump a "liar and con man" this year after he criticized politicians who wouldn't say if they'd received a COVID-19 vaccine booster in an apparent dig at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

But on Tuesday, a tweet from Dash Dobrofsky noted that Coulter's declaration about Trump being "done" stated that the "establishment is turning on [Trump] before his indictment."

"Rats scurrying off the sinking MAGA ship," it added.

While Trump has not been indicted in connection with the Mar-a-Lago raid, the former president's ex-attorney told Newsweek that the unsealed affidavit supporting the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago gives the Justice Department enough evidence to indict him.

Another user, Richard Lee, tweeted on Tuesday that Coulter "is the latest rat to abandon the USS Trump."

Newsweek was unable to find a way to contact Coulter for comment by publication time.
