A man with a bizarre criminal past who had been on the run from authorities for several weeks after allegedly stealing a number of animals from his ex-wife has been captured.
Jon Green was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday in San Antonio, Texas, according to local Albuquerque station KRQE. He faces a multitude of charges, including vehicle theft, fraud, forgery and concealing identity.
A search for Green had been underway for several weeks after he reportedly broke into his ex-wife's house in Carlsbad, New Mexico, last month and stole her SUV as well as three of her search and rescue dogs, according to the outlet.
Green spent eight years in prison for setting fire to a Monaco penthouse that led to the death of two people, including billionaire banker Edmond Safra, KRQE reports. At the time of that deadly incident, Green was using the name "Ted Maher."

After serving time in the military as a Green Beret, Green became a registered nurse and reportedly set fire to the penthouse, not meaning to kill Safra and another nurse who was in the home at the time but to appear as a hero and win favor from the billionaire.
Police at the time of the deadly incident stated that Green was found with self-inflicted stab wounds. He claimed that he had fought off two masked individuals, but police said those two people did not exist, according to KRQE.
His story was featured on national outlets such as Dateline and 48 Hours, and he has for years continued to disagree with the authorities' version of the deadly event, KRQE states. In an apparent attempt to start over, he then started going by the name "Jon Green" and worked as a crude oil truck driver in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he met his now ex-wife.
In a response to Newsweek, the Carlsbad Police Department said they were "excited and relieved to learn of Mr. Green's arrest in Texas."
The police went on to state that they had "worked diligently with federal, state and local authorities in the hopes we could assist in taking Mr. Green into custody in order for him to answer for the crimes he has been alleged to have committed in Carlsbad, New Mexico."
The response also mentions how the case has "polarized our community and has been intriguing nationally as well."
The statement concludes by thanking those who assisted in bringing Green into custody and alludes to his past.
"The more we learned about Mr. Green the more we understood why it was so crucial we play our part in bringing him to justice," the statement reads.
