Away has become Netflix latest big hit. The Hillary Swank space travel drama has been top of the streamer's TV charts in the US for the last 10 days, and is currently the third most-watched series in the world in September behind Lucifer and Cobra Kai.
Despite this, the show has not been renewed for Season 2 yet, leaving fans wondering exactly if and when the show will get more episodes ordered.
The fact that Netflix has not commissioned Away Season 2 should not be too much of a concern for fans. The streamer usually likes to wait at least 30 days before making any announcements about the future of a show, so that they can look at a month's worth of viewing data to see exactly how popular the show is with viewers and how many new subscribers it brings in.
Recently, however, the average time between a show getting released and get recommissioned has been closer to two months, especially with new shows with no previous seasons. As such, the average time between release and renewal in 2020 is 58 days. If Away follows this average, then we will know about Season 2 by the start of November 2020. Even if the show takes as long as Outer Banks to be renewed, viewers will get a decision in mid-December.
However, it is likely to get a renewal before Outer Banks did. Per FlixPatrol, Away is already the 31st most-watched Netflix original series of the year, meaning it has already been watched more than all but one of the shows above despite only being out for two weeks.
If it can get better viewing figures than Warrior Nun, the show might be renewed even sooner. That show is currently the 10th most-watched on the year on Netflix.
Though Away has not been renewed for Season 2, its creators have already started to think about what could happen. Series showrunner Jessica Goldberg said in an interview with Inverse: "Somehow, that family managed to stay very tethered to each other in the first season, but this is 14 months on Mars and then 8 months back. So just all those questions seem so exciting. It feels like there's a great season two."
