In the world of The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself magic has consequences, and magic users aren't afraid to use their powers for nefarious reasons.
The Netflix show follows Nathan (Jay Lycurgo), the 16-year-old illegitimate son of one of the world's most powerful witches, Marcus (David Gyasi), who everyone fears may well become just like his father and is stuck between a war between the Fairborn witches and the Blood witches.
Nathan tries to come into his own and embrace his powers, but after several shocking deaths he is forced to go on the run with friend Annalise (Nadia Parkes) and fellow witch Gabriel (Emilien Vekemans).
'The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself' Character and Power Guide

Based on Sally Green's "Half Bad" novels, The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself has a number of important characters, who each have their own unique powers.
Powers are passed down via the family, with a parents helping kickstart their child's ability by making their children drink their blood. Here is everything you need to know about each character and what their powers are.
1. Nathan
Nathan, as previously mentioned, is the titular character of the Netflix series and it is his mission to find a vial of his father's blood in order to fully come into his powers before he turns 17, the age at which all powers must be inherited.
Lycurgo told Newsweek how he felt his character was driven by an inherent loneliness in the show's first season, adding: "He is just a really lonely and isolated, quiet person, because he's always been in fight-and-flight [mode] and he doesn't trust anyone.
"He doesn't have a lot of people that he can trust, and I think what's really nice is that he meets people along the way, that he finds this confidence, and I think it's really beautiful. I think it's a really beautiful teenage story, to be honest, because I think a lot of times teenagers are scared to talk and have a voice, and I know I did."
Given the plot of the first season revolves around Nathan getting his powers, his full abilities have not yet been revealed in the show but he is shown as being able to heal.
2. Annalise
Annalise is the daughter of a Fairborn witch, Soul (Paul Ready), but despite being expected to have positive abilities her powers are actually quite dark as it causes the immediate destruction of those she attacks, known as "undoing."
In gruesome scenes, Annalise is able to literally turn a person inside out on a whim, though the violent nature of her powers are something she struggles to accept.
Parkes reflected on this, and told Newsweek: "I think when she gets ... her power, she kind of doesn't know how to deal with it, or what to make of it, and I think it's a really beautiful kind of coming-of-age story because I think when we were growing up we all kind of had moments of like, 'I've got this emotion, I don't know what to do with it.'"
3. Gabriel
Gabriel is a Blood witch that comes into contact with Nathan and Annalise when they go on the run from her father and The Council of Fairborn Witches who are seeking to take Nathan in.
In the show, Gabriel is an alchemist who uses various powders and potions to impact those around him, which could include making them walk in slow motion or lose their memory of him completely.
Vekemans explained how much detail went into his character's costumes in order to accommodate his ability, sharing: "Hannah Edwards, the costume designer, she was amazing and I really am a big fan of her work, and working with her was so great.
"She really brought, with Colm McCarthy the director, this kind of edgy, underground [look], but also [it was] witchy, they really had this balance of looks, and they gave me so much jewellery, that was so fun.
"I think I had, like, nine necklaces and so many rings, and then they also made this amazing holster, a special holster for my power because I'm an alchemist, so I have all my potions and powders that I can use to fight or to do other things. And so it was like a special holster where I can bring my my powders out and I really enjoyed the look they created."
4. Jessica

Jessica is Nathan's half-sister who blames him for their mother's death, and so takes out her anger on him and everyone around her.
Played by Isobel Jesper Jones, Jessica is able to shapeshift into anyone, a skill she often uses for nefarious purposes such as taunting someone who is a threat to her or even impersonating someone she killed.
Describing what it was like to film her shapeshifting scenes, Jesper Jones said she had to deal with several amusing moments on set, the most awkward of which was in a changing room.
"I had a lot of like, shapeshifting weirdness," Jesper Jones said. "I think, especially in the locker room scene when Jessica shapeshifts into Hazel (Harriet Cains), and then her boyfriend and her dad and that was a really weird occasion because that was just all four of us, wearing not many clothes at all, standing really close to each other, and me kind of crouching down by someone's bottom so I can jump back up when it's meant to be me again.
"There was a couple of moments where we were like, 'well, we're four adults standing here with no clothes on,' it was weird."
5. Marcus

Marcus, Nathan's father, is said to be the most dangerous witch in the world because of his remarkable power, which is the ability to transform into various animals. Marcus' preferred animal to transform into is a wolf.
Lycurgo spoke highly of his co-star, Gyasi, saying he learned a lot about acting from their short scene together in the show's Season 1 finale.
"Man, you meet these actors and this guy came on set his first day, questionably the biggest scene of the show, and absolutely killed it," Lycurgo said.
"Like it was an absolute honor to work with that man, and, you know, as much as we didn't really get to work with each other it was arguably one of those days where I learned the most as an actor, and he's been doing it so much longer than me, but it was just really nice to see him do what he does.
"And he was just so playful, and just had like this real stillness and this intensity, I really enjoyed it with him and I can't wait for people to see what he can do because it was amazing, [I was] really fortunate to work with him."
The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself is out on Netflix now.
