Joe Biden's Lack of Charges Over Classified Documents Sparks MAGA Fury

Joe Biden is unlikely to face charges in connection with mishandling classified documents, sparking outrage from MAGA activists.

Special counsel Robert Hur has been investigating the president since January after documents were found in Biden's former office, the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., and at his Wilmington, Delaware home. The documents were from his time as vice president under former President Barack Obama.

But while The Wall Street Journal and CNN reported that the results of the investigation are expected to be critical of Biden and his staff for the way they handled the materials, sources told the publication he won't face charges.

Newsweek contacted the White House and Hur's office by email for comment.

This is in contrast to the fate of former President Donald Trump, who earlier this year was criminally indicted by special counsel Jack Smith for retaining classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago resort, after he left the White House, and for allegedly not cooperating with the National Archives when they tried to get them back. The case is set to go to trial in May. Trump has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing.

While there are parallels in the two cases, Biden's team said they cooperated with the National Archives when the materials were found and throughout the investigation. Biden sat down for a voluntary interview with Hur on at least two occasions in October, the White House previously confirmed.

Trump, on the other hand, allegedly refused to give back documents and when the FBI obtained a search warrant, documents were stored in spaces including a "ballroom, a bathroom and shower, and office space, his bedroom, and a storage room," the indictment said.

Nevertheless, MAGA activists have reacted angrily to the reports, with one figure claiming it showed the U.S. is "corrupt."

On Fox News, Sean Hannity said Biden was getting off "scot-free" adding that investigators had been "politicized and weaponized" because Biden is "not a conservative."

Monica Crowley, a Republican and Former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury implied the news was not surprising.

"We fix this or we perish," she added.

Liz Harrington, Trump's spokeswoman, shared a link to the story on X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: "We live in a very corrupt country."

Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn also compared the treatment of Biden and Trump in a post on X.

The investigation into Biden is expected to be published at the end of the year, according to CNN.

The Washington Post reported that Biden's son, Hunter Biden, was interviewed in October in connection with the investigation.
