Is Big Chungus Coming to MultiVersus?

Big Chungus may be coming to MultiVersus after a European trademark was filed by Warner Bros. Entertainment to use the meme character in a video game. Barring the creation of some kind of Looney Tunes hero shooter, we can't think of a better place for him to show up than the popular fighting game.

Will Big Chungus Be the Next MultiVersus Character That Is Revealed?

Warner Bros. filed a trademark for Big Chungus with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on August 26, 2022. The filing requests a trademark for Big Chungus across almost every conceivable medium, including audiovisual media, clothing, toys, computer software, entertainment services, literature, amusement parks and more.

While this trademark would allow Warner Bros. to use Big Chungus across a multitude of merchandise, it makes sense to use him as a MultiVersus fighter. It's a live service game, so there will be a steady stream of content added, and the popularity of Big Chungus currently outstrips many of WB's non-meme characters.

However, the rotund rabbit will not be the next fighter added to the game. Rick Sanchez, Stripe (Gremlins) and Black Adam are still on the slate for Season 1, so we likely won't get to see Big Chungus until Season 2 at the earliest.

Who Is Big Chungus?

Big Chungus has existed since December 20, 1941, but didn't surface in meme form until 77 years later, in 2018. He originated in the Merrie Melodies episode "Wabbit Twouble," in a scene where Bug Bunny makes fun of "fat Elmer" (a redesign of Elmer Fudd that only lasted for four episodes) by mockingly transforming himself into a similar form.

The meme became popular when a user on Reddit's r/comedyheaven forum posted a fake PS4 game case featuring a stretched image of Bugs Bunny making fun of Elmer Fudd with the title "Big Chungus."

A week later, a GameStop manager made a Facebook post saying that a woman had come into his store asking to purchase Big Chungus for her son. This was reposted across the internet, and the popularity of the character grew exponentially.

While other memes that originated at the same time have faded into obscurity, Big Chungus endures. We hypothesize that the character has retained his popularity because it's a meme that means nothing and is simply an absurd image of a fat rabbit. Thousands of additional memes spawned from the original, and a howitzer crew from the U.S. Army's 3rd Cavalry Regiment even named their artillery piece after it.
