The Bodyguard, the iconic 1992 romantic thriller starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, is getting a remake and many movie fans have just one question—why?
The project is in its early stages but Tony-nominated playwright Matthew Lopez has been chosen by Warner Bros to write a screenplay.
The 1992 movie has one of the bestselling film soundtracks of all time, including the late Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You."
Variety reports that the movie, which grossed more than $400 million worldwide, is set to be "reimagined" and has named the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson or Channing Tatum and Cardi B as possible leading duos.

But the news has left many people asking if a remake is necessary.
"There is nothing worth remaking in The Bodyguard, a nonsense film from a threadbare script that we remember only because it captured Whitney Houston at the absolute, incandescent supernova zenith of her stardom. You can't remake Whitney Houston, so why bother?" wrote film critic Guy Lodge on Twitter.

Journalist Elie Mystal tweeted: "Maybe... *maybe* if John Legend is the singer and Charlize Theron is the bodyguard. *Maybe*. But I still think no."

"Stop remaking the classics," read a tweet from one fan. "The Bodyguard does not need a remake."
Another Twitter user called the remake a "horrible idea," adding: "Hollywood refusing to invest in new talent and create new stories is pure laziness at this point."
Writer Kirk A. Moore joked: "This is about to star Camila Cabello and Bradley Cooper."
Another person posted: "Can we just NOT! No one asked for this...why touch perfection!?"
The news of the remake comes as a biopic about Houston, who died in 2012, is set for release in December 2022.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody will star Naomi Ackie from Master of None and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Kasi Lemmons, who made the Oscar-nominated Harriet, is directing.
The movie promises to be a "joyous, emotional and heartbreaking celebration of the life and music of Whitney Houston, the greatest female R&B pop vocalist of all time," according to TriStar Pictures.
Speaking to Deadline about the biopic, Lemmons said: "Early in my writing career I developed two projects for Whitney and I had the opportunity to meet her. She was a tremendous, incomparable artist and her story is as awe-inspiring as it is tragic. I feel privileged to be part of bringing her life story and music to the audience."
