Four people have died following a shooting at a birthday party on Sunday at a house in Inglewood, California.

Three men and two women were shot during the incident at 1304 N. Park Avenue at 1:38 a.m. One of the men shot is still in hospital in a critical condition. Two of the victims have been named by the families as they spoke to local media after the shooting.

Speaking to KABC-TV, family members said the birthday party was held for Breahna Stines. They added that her sister, the other female victim, Marney Hamilton was also shot and killed.

Stines had turned 20 the day of the shooting and was celebrating with her older sister, 25-year old Hamilton. Both were studying to become nurses.

Neither woman lived at the home where the shooting happened, as the residence was used as an unregulated short-term rental for parties and gatherings. The shooting was also called an "ambush" by Inglewood Mayor James T.Butts.

"This was a targeted ambush, gang-related, it was not random and it was related to the people that were expected to be at that party," the mayor said at a news conference. He also issued a press release about the shooting.

The Inglewood Police Department tweeted the mayor's press release and asked for anyone with information to submit a tip to the Los Angeles Crime Stoppers.

When police entered the scene they found three murder victims; two females and one male. The two other male shooting victims were transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. One died en route to the hospital. The other victim, whose name has not been revealed, remains in a critical condition but is expected to survive.

"The surviving victim indicated that he is gang-affiliated from another city. He has an extensive criminal history," the mayor's office stated. "This information along the targeted nature of the crime, the weapons used and statements uttered before the shooting by the suspects indicate that this crime was indeed gang-related."

Friends and family laid candles and pictures of Stines and Hamilton at the crime scene and spoke of the anguish they are now going through.

"Those kids, lived their life just trying to have fun, celebration, celebrating life and it was cut short," a friend, Bre, said.

"Everyone got along with them, all she wanted to do was celebrate her birthday and her sister came to be with her, just beautiful young ladies," another friend, Tesha, told KABC-TV.

"They both were outgoing, beautiful girls. They both had futures ahead of them," the sisters' mother said, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Newsweek has contacted the Inglewood Police Department for comment.
