A trucker who killed his boss and injured another in Illinois on Tuesday before he shot himself was upset about the pay at his new job, authorities said.
Burr Ridge Police Deputy Chief Marc Loftus said the gunman, identified as Jeremy Spicer, 31, had been working at Winner's Freight for about a week and was about to be fired over a disagreement regarding pay and company property.
Local police said they received a call around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday indicating that shots had been fired at an office building. Spicer allegedly shot his boss, Nicola Misovic, 30, who was taken to an area hospital but ultimately died of his injuries. After shooting Misovic, Spicer allegedly went into another office in the same building and shot a 31-year-old woman, according to a news release from the Burr Ridge Police Department.
Tuesday's fatal shooting is one of the most recent in an ongoing problem with gun violence across the country. More than 9,500 people have died from gunshots so far in 2022, with more than 5,400 of them related to incidents of suicide, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
The identity of the female victim has not been released. Police said the woman underwent surgery for her injuries and is in the intensive care unit in stable condition.
Police said after leaving the building, Spicer went to another nearby business. He asked the employees if he could use the restroom, which they agreed to, but after about 20 minutes, the employees got suspicious and asked Spicer to leave then called the police, Loftus said.
Officers were setting up a perimeter and began searching for the suspect with the help of surrounding police agencies and a Chicago Police helicopter. Two schools were advised to shelter in place.
When law enforcement arrived, Spicer was sitting outside of a nearby building. As the first officer approached, Spicer "turned his gun on himself and shot himself," Lotus said, adding that he used a .40-caliber handgun.
Police say the motive for the shooting is not clear at this time, but the investigation is still ongoing.
This latest incident is one of several recent shootings to receive national attention. Last Thursday, a Burger King employee was arrested for allegedly shooting at a customer over mayonnaise. Also on Thursday, a woman in Atlanta was shot and killed over a dispute involving a bowling ball. On Sunday in Jacksonville, Florida, a woman was hospitalized after being shot in the face twice.
