Velasquez last competed in MMA in February 2019. He hasn't fought since he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou during a match at that time.
He won the UFC heavyweight title from Brock Lesnar in October 2010, before losing it to Junior dos Santos in his following fight in November 2011.
Velasquez went on a three-year hiatus from the sport after he beat Travis Browne in July 2016.
After his stint as an MMA fighter, Velasquez entered the world of wrestling and briefly worked for the WWE.
However, he was released during the COVID-19 pandemic due to budget cuts.
Velasquez's arrest comes just months after UFC Hall of Fame fighter Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell was arrested and booked in a Los Angeles-area jail on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence.
Police were called to Liddell's home in the early hours of the night according to reports where officers were said to have determined an argument between Liddell, 51, and his wife, Heidi, had turned physical.
An inmate report from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at the time showed Liddell was held at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Agoura Hills, and his bail had been set at $20,000.
