A scary scene in Northern California resulted in 100 homes being evacuated.
A trailer carrying gasoline overturned in the city of Fremont on Friday while on the interstate. The trailer supposedly collided with a car at around 4:50 AM PST on Highway 262. All northbound lanes on Interstate Highway 680 remain blocked. In the commotion, the trailer's gas leaked out onto the freeway and the resulting fumes forced nearby residents to evacuate.
Among the agencies assisting in the clean-up include the Fremont Police Department, the Alameda County Fire Department, Alameda County Public Health Services, and Caltrans District Four. Firefighters began offloading fuel from the overturned trailer into a recovery trailer.
"Firefighters estimate it will take between 8-12 hours to off load the remaining fuel into another tanker and upright the trailer and tractor," wrote the Fremont Fire Department in a statement posted on Twitter.
According to local news station ABC 7, those who were evacuated are currently located at the City of Fremont Public Works Corps Yard. Newsweek has reached out to both the California Highway Patrol and the Fremont Public Works department for comment.
