Conservative commentator Candace Owens has said that President Joe Biden is not able to escape chants "Let's Go Brandon" and defended the use of the phrase as a way to criticize the president and the mainstream media.

Owens defended the use of the chant during an appearance on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight on Monday and also questioned President Joe Biden's mental competence after the president's interaction with a caller who used the phrase during the Christmas Eve Santa tracker phone-in.

The phrase "Let's Go Brandon" is widely understood to mean "F*** Joe Biden" and originated following an incident at a NASCAR race. It has since gained popularity among critics of the president.

Owens said on Monday: "The irony of the coverage about this is 'Let's Go Brandon'—the chant arose because of America feeling—it was a referendum on the mainstream media—the mainstream media is constantly lying about Americans."

"And so in response to this, you have the mainstream media going after this man and completely lying about him and what the chant represents, trying to make it something much more sinister and vile than it is," she said.

She was referring to Jared Schmeck, the man who said "Let's Go Brandon" on the Christmas phone-in, who made a media appearance following the incident saying former President Donald Trump "is my president and he should still be president right now."

"In reality, it's just America saying the mainstream media lies and we don't like this president." Owens said, adding: "You have to ask yourself at this point, who are they lying for?"

Owens then suggested Biden would not be able to escape the chants.

"They can't even put him in public," she said. "They put him behind screens, he gets the questions in advance, because there's nowhere he can go—there's no state, not even New York City—he can't even go into the city of New York without people screaming this chant—all around the U.S.A."

Owens went on to say: "No matter what they say about Joe Biden, America is rejecting this presidency."

"And America is altogether rejecting that left stream media which continually and routinely lies about the American people," she said.

Owens also took aim at first lady Jill Biden, suggesting she should not have allowed the president to make the TV appearance and questioning Biden's mental capacity.

"Shame on Jill Biden," Owens said. "I would never allow my husband—if he was losing his cognitive discipline—I would never allow him to go on TV or pretend that he's running for president as we all try to hide them but this is a power-hungry family."

Owens said that in her view "when they sat down and they decided to run as a family" Biden "understood what he was doing, he knows what his mental state is and when he has moments of clarity, he knows that this is a farce of a presidency and he continues to go on anyway."

"So I grant him no exceptions and no excuses," she said.
