Carolyn Maloney Warns Trump About Her Classified Documents Probe

Rep. Carolyn Maloney has warned former President Donald Trump about the probe her congressional committee is conducting into classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

Maloney, a New York Democrat who chairs the House Oversight Committee, made the comments in response to Trump's mock endorsement of her re-election campaign, on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

Trump also "endorsed" Daniel Goldman. Both Democrats are running in redrawn New York congressional districts and were involved in the former president's first impeachment.

Maloney called Trump's endorsement "laughable" on Thursday, writing on Twitter: "I reject any endorsement from Donald Trump. Trump doesn't respect women. He instigated the attacks on January 6th and claimed that the 2020 election was a big lie."

She added: "He should be more concerned about the investigation I'm leading as Chair of the Oversight Committee into the storage of his classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll pass."

Trump called Maloney "a kind and wonderful person who has always said terrific things about me and will support me no matter what I do" and offered her his "Complete and Total Endorsement."

Goldman was the chief investigator during Trump's first impeachment and also rejected his endorsement, calling it "a pathetic attempt at fooling Democrats who are far smarter than Trump is."

Maloney represents New York's 12th district, which is being redrawn, and faces Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York's 10th district, among other candidates, in the Democratic primary on August 23. Goldman is running for the Democratic nomination in the new 10th district.

Trump's mock support may reflect his buoyant mood after one of his biggest Republican critics, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, was defeated in Wednesday's GOP primary.

Cheney lost to Trump-endorsed lawyer Harriet Hageman, who echoed the former president's unfounded claims that the 2020 presidential election was "rigged."

However, Trump is facing a number of investigations, including the FBI probe into the handling of White House documents. He also recently sat for a deposition in New York as part of an investigation into the Trump Organization's finances and invoked his Fifth Amendment rights.

On August 13, Maloney and Rep. Adam Schiff wrote a letter to Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, seeking a security damage assessment of the documents seized from Mar-a-Lago.

They wrote that "at least one report indicates that FBI's investigation focused in part on highly classified documents 'relating to nuclear weapons,' which are among our nation's most closely guarded secrets.

"If this report is true, it is hard to overstate the national security danger that could emanate from the reckless decision to remove and retain this material."

While the House Oversight Committee is investigating the Mar-a-Lago documents, Republicans have indicated that they will open a series of investigations if they retake the House, the Senate or both in this year's midterm elections.

Those could include investigating the FBI and Department of Justice over the Mar-a-Lago raid and an inquiry into the House select committee on January 6.
