What Did Casey Anthony's Brother Lee Say at Her Murder Trial?

In a new Peacock documentary, Where the Truth Lies, Casey Anthony speaks for the first time on camera since her 2011 trial for the alleged murder of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee.

Telling her story in the true-crime program, Casey Anthony said that her father, George, and brother, Lee, both sexually abused her from a young age. This was also an allegation made by her defense team during her trial. Both George and Lee Anthony have strongly denied these accusations.

Anthony's brother, Lee, testified during her 2011 trial, and viewers of Where the Truth Lies may be wondering exactly what he said.

The Casey Anthony Case

On July 15, 2008, Caylee Anthony was reported missing by her grandmother, Cindy, and in a conversation with a 911 operator Casey Anthony said that she had been missing for a total of 31 days. She also claimed that a nanny had kidnapped her daughter in June, though this statement was later revealed to be a lie.

Anthony was charged with child neglect, making false statements to authorities and obstructing the investigation on July 16, and, in October 2008, Anthony was charged with first-degree murder. Caylee's remains were found in December 2008 in a wooded area near the Anthony family home in Orlando, Florida.

The trial began in May 2011, and in July the jury found Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Anthony was found guilty of four misdemeanor counts of lying to a law enforcement officer, and she was sentenced to four years in prison. She was given credit for time served and was released on July 17, 2011.

What Did Casey Anthony's Brother Lee Say at Her Murder Trial?

During Casey Anthony's 2011 trial, there were several witnesses brought in to testify, including her mother and father, Cindy and George, as well as her brother, Lee.

In his testimony, Lee was asked about when he first became aware of his sister's pregnancy. He said that it was something that was kept from him until she began showing. At that point, he testified that he questioned both his sister and mother but they did not give a direct answer.

"It was denied to me and I was told to let it go," Lee said of his mother's reaction when he asked her if his sister was pregnant.

He went on to explain that he did not attend the birth of his niece because he "was a little hurt" and "just didn't want to be there."

When asked to elaborate, he said: "I was very angry at my mom and I was also angry at my sister.

"I was just angry at everyone in general that they didn't want to include me and didn't find it important enough to tell me, especially after I'd already asked. So, I was really hurt and I don't think I wanted to believe it."

He also spoke about the period of 31 days before Caylee was reported missing, and said he had tried to contact his sister on July 3, 2008. He said he called her multiple times and, when she did answer, he asked about Caylee's whereabouts, and she said she was "being watched while she was out with a friend."

On July 15, 2008, the day Caylee would eventually be reported missing, Lee went to his family home to meet with his parents and sister and discovered the white Pontiac Sunfire that he used to own and was later owned by Casey. He said that the vehicle had a "very potent, very strong" smell.

During her 911 call, Cindy Anthony said that she believed the car smelled as if a dead body had been in it, per a report from ABC News at the time.

During his testimony, Lee also recalled how he had questioned his sister about her not allowing their mother to see Caylee, and he said his sister responded: "Because maybe I'm a spiteful b****."

Lee also spoke of how he had spoken to Casey alone about Caylee, and confronted her over why they could not bring her home. He said that his sister insisted Caylee was with a nanny and that she did not want to disturb her sleep pattern.

He also recalled: "She told me that my mother had numerous times thrown it in her face, my sister's face, that Casey was an unfit mother for Caylee and that Casey says 'maybe I am' and I went on to say that my mother had also referenced Caylee as being a mistake but a great mistake, or the best mistake that Casey has ever made."

Lee testified that his sister later said "she had not seen Caylee in 31 days, that she had been kidnapped and that the nanny took her." The next day, Casey Anthony would be charged with child neglect, making false statements to authorities and obstructing the investigation.
