In three episodes, Sins of Our Mother explores the alleged crimes of Lori Vallow Daybell and her fifth husband, Chad Daybell.

The series comes from Skye Borgman, the director of Netflix's Abducted in Plain Sight and The Girl in the Picture, and delves deep into the killings of Tylee Ryan and J.J. Vallow, who disappeared in September 2019 and were found dead in June 2020.

Newsweek has everything you need to know about Chad Daybell and where he is now.

What Happened to Chad Daybell?

Chad Daybell is a devout follower of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and a "doomsday" author. He has written more than 25 books about the end of the world and near-death experience accounts.

He also had extreme religious beliefs, saying that only he could see good and bad spirits, and he even rated them on a scale. Those who were at the top of the bad spirit scale were, in his eyes, zombies, and they had to be eliminated.

He crossed paths with LDS member Vallow in 2018, after being introduced by Melanie Gibb, a mutual friend, at a "Preparing a People" event, which gets followers ready for the "Second Coming of Christ."

Vallow's beliefs began to align with Daybell's, and she too believed there were zombies in their close family and friend circles and that the apocalypse was coming.

As seen in Sins of Our Mother, Daybell and Vallow became close after their meeting, but friends who knew each individual could never have predicted the events that would follow.

Daybell, along with his wife, Vallow, would come to find himself accused of first-degree murder relating to the deaths of Tylee Ryan, 16, and J.J. Vallow, 7.

Daybell also stands accused of the first-degree murder of his wife, Tammy, 49.

Both Daybell and Vallow have pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against them.

Tammy Daybell

In May 2021, Chad Daybell was charged with the first-degree murder of his wife Tammy.

She died in October 2019 in her sleep from what was recorded as "natural causes," and at the time of her death, no postmortem or autopsy was carried out. As heard in Sins of Our Mother, Daybell took out her life insurance policy shortly after her death.

However, when police learned Daybell and Vallow wed in Kauai, Hawaii, just two weeks after Tammy's death, officers exhumed Tammy's body and carried out an autopsy. These results have not yet been made public.

Tylee Ryan and J.J. Vallow

In November 2019, J.J.'s grandmother called in a welfare check to Idaho Police after she came concerned about him.

Officers visited where Lori Vallow, Chad Daybell and Alex Cox lived, and Vallow claimed J.J. was living with a friend in Arizona, which was false.

It soon became apparent to authorities that Tylee Ryan and J.J. were missing children.

The last-known sighting of the pair was on September 8, 2019, at Yellowstone National Park in the company of Lori Vallow and her uncle Cox. As seen in Sins of Our Mother, there is photographic evidence of them being at the park.

Meanwhile, Daybell and Vallow had left Idaho for Kauai, Hawaii, and refused to disclose Tylee Ryan and J.J.'s whereabouts.

Vallow was arrested in February 2020 on felony charges of desertion and nonsupport of her dependent children after she failed to produce them.

Then, 10 months after Tylee Ryan and J.J. went missing, their remains were found buried in shallow graves in Daybell's backyard in Idaho.

The police were led to the discovery by analyzing Cox's phone records, which had placed him at the location of the graves around the time the kids had disappeared.

Where is Chad Daybell Now?

Chad Daybell is awaiting trial in Idaho for the first-degree murders of Tylee Ryan, 16, J.J. Vallow, 7, and his ex-wife, Tammy.

Daybell and Lori Vallow will be tried together in 2023. Prosecutors are fighting to have the death penalty available if they are convicted.

According to East Idaho News, Daybell's attorney John Prior opposed the joint trial but was unsuccessful in making his case.

Speaking to CBS News in 2021, Daybell's children shared their belief that their father was innocent, with his son Mark saying: "It's just not possible. Anyone who says that my dad could kill a person doesn't know my dad."

Sins of Our Mother is streaming on Netflix now.
