Daredevil fans mourned the cancelation of the series in 2018, following its third season.

At the time, it seemed as if that would be the end, and that Charlie Cox's iteration of the character would remain a thing of the past. But all that changed in 2021 with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye.

The film saw the welcome return of Cox as Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, while the Disney+ series featured Daredevil villain Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), a.k.a Kingpin, as the adoptive uncle to Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox).

This year, Cox played Murdock in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and he is also expected to appear in 2023 series Echo.

The actor and D'Onofrio's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) gave fans hope that Daredevil would come back in some form, and in May 2022 they finally got the good news: The superhero would be getting his own Disney+ series titled Daredevil: Born Again.

Cox shared an update on the upcoming show with Newsweek, and reiterated his joy over getting to play Murdock again.

Daredevil: Born Again is set to be released in early 2024, and Cox told Newsweek how filming will begin at the start of 2023, with production set to continue until the end of the year, which would explain the long wait for fans.

Discussing the Marvel series while promoting his new Netflix spy drama Treason, the actor said: "I don't know really anything about next year's show, I know that we will be filming early next year [and will] hopefully finish by the end of the year. I know that it's 18 episodes, which is a humongous commitment.

"What it's going to be like on Disney+ I have no idea, I'm very excited to discover what things we will have in common with the show that we made before and what things will be different and, yeah, I just can't wait to get started actually."

Netflix's Daredevil had three seasons in total, it was the first of the streamer's Marvel shows and began airing in 2015 followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. Daredevil's second season introduced Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) to the MCU, and led to the character getting his own spin-off, Punisher, in 2017.

While all of these shows were canceled by Netflix between 2018 and 2019, Daredevil is the first to be revived in some capacity. It's currently unclear how many other original cast members will return to the MCU like Cox and D'Onofrio, and the show's plot has also been kept under wraps.

Cox has previously thanked fan campaign Save Daredevil for helping to show the continued interest in the Netflix show, and the actor told Newsweek of returning to the part: "It feels amazing. It feels like we've been brought back from the dead almost you know?

"Like, I thought that the show and certainly my portrayal of that character had kind of ended, and a number of years had passed, and suddenly we were kind of thrust back into the MCU, or thrust into the MCU for the first time and we're going to kind of start over again and have those experience all over again.

"I feel unbelievably grateful, I can't believe that I get to keep playing this character. It's been, obviously, one of the one of the great honors of my life and my career."

Daredevil: Born Again is currently slated to be released on Disney+ in early 2024.
