A husband who did not make any effort to surprise his wife for 21 years has been blasted online over his lack of effort and desire when it comes to spending money for gifts.

In a viral post shared on U.K.-based discussion website Mumsnet, which can be seen here, user Bunnyfuller explained it is her 55th birthday this week and claimed her husband's lack of effort in getting a gift had left her upset.

According to DivorceNet, a website that aims to link up clients with divorce attorneys, a lack of commitment is one of the most common reasons why marriages break down.

It also claimed money disagreements were another major factor as to why marriages ended in divorce.

The Mumsnet user, who disagreed with her husband's view on spending money, said: "On DH's (dear husband's birthday I got him some apple EarPods, from Wowcher, admittedly, but all the same a well over £100 gift, cheapie lunch out.

"After 21 years of no effort at a surprise, I've resigned myself to booking/choosing anything myself and he just doesn't. So, I booked a restaurant on a night when there's a deal - three-course set menu. His first words were. 'We're not having alcohol, right?'

"I've canceled the booking, what's the fun going out with someone who clearly resents getting their hand in their pocket?

"It's not that I would have demanded three cocktails and a bottle of fizz, it's just him saying as the opener that has p***ed me off."

"Teenage DD's (dear daughter's) working over my birthday, so yet another year where 'hope you're spoilt' is a f***ing sick joke.

The Mumsnet user continued: "I feel invisible and unloved. Yes, I'm an adult but just long for one year where a birthday is a special day for me, just once."

Since the post was shared on August 21, the post has managed to attract some 200 responses.

Most of those who replied to the post blasted the husband with some branding him "selfish" over his lack of effort.

One Mumsnet user said: "That is terrible. I would be upset and disappointed too. You are not unreasonable. Can you do something nice for yourself? Nice treat, coffee, cake and cinema on your own? Or even, dare I suggest it on Mumsnet, a spa day?"

Another added: "I would be hurt and annoyed if it was a standard meal out, never mind for your significant birthday. God, nothing worse than a miser. Soul destroying."

A third posted: "So, he's a misery and selfish then? Treat yourself to something nice, splash out if you can afford it. Then on his birthday get him sweet f all."

Newsweek was not able to verify the details of the case.
