Cheer on Netflix had the world in the palm of its hands when it dropped on the streaming platform in January 2020. The sports documentary, about the competitive world of cheerleading at Texas-based Navarro College went on to win three Emmys. And, after the National Championships win in 2019, fans have been waiting to find out what was next in store for Navarro. Now, the wait for Season 2 is finally over, with Netflix confirming its return over the Christmas holidays.
Newsweek has everything you need to know about Cheer Season 2, including release date, cast, trailer, plot, and more.
When Is 'Cheer' Season 2 Out on Netflix?
The wait for Cheer Season 2 is almost over. Netflix has announced the next installment in Navarro College's story will premiere on Wednesday, January 12 2022.
There will be nine episodes in the new season, tracing their journey to the 2021 championships in Daytona.
To watch Cheer Season 2, you can subscribe to Netflix for $8.99 now and in the meantime, Season 1 is available on the platform for you to binge-watch ahead of Season 2's release.
What Is 'Cheer' Season 2 About?
Following the same format as the first series, Cheer Season 2 will track Navarro College's journey as the team prepares for the National Cheerleading Championships.
Once again, their biggest rivals are Trinity Valley, a community college located roughly 40 miles from Navarro College in Texas.
Season 2 of Cheer will also deal with the aftermath of Navarro College cheerleader, Jerry Harris, who was arrested on federal sexual misconduct charges, including the production of child pornography in September 2020. Harris had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
In the trailer for the new season, coach Monica Aldama states: "I can't even, like, process it right now" when asked about the charges.
Along the way, audiences will get to learn more about their favorite cheerleaders' backstories and why Navarro means everything to them.
In a statement ahead of the documentary series release, director Greg Whiteley, who is also behind Netflix's Last Chance U, said: "I am a huge believer in the power of stories and telling them honestly.
"I believe the story is going to ultimately be the best version of itself when you are honoring what is true, and you're not running from it. This season covers events as they unfolded, beginning in January 2020 through April 2021, following Navarro College and their rival Trinity Valley Community College on their journeys to the national championship.
"The new episodes also tackle extremely difficult moments, including the impact of COVID-19 and criminal charges against one of Navarro's former team members. It was inspiring, heartbreaking, sometimes frustrating, and ultimately moving to be a part of their lives. Flying home from our last day of shooting in Daytona, I thought, 'I cannot believe we saw what we just saw, we experienced what we just experienced.' If we do our job right, we're able to take the audience on that same ride."
