The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has confirmed that a plane crashed in the southern province of Guangxi near the city of Wuzhou in Teng county on Monday morning.

The aircraft is believed to be a China Eastern Airlines passenger plane carrying 123 passengers and nine crew members, according to a Telegraph report.

The flight that crashed appears to be Flight No. MU5735 from Kunming to Guangzhou. Flight-tracking data showed the Boeing 737-89P rapidly lost speed and entered a steep descent.

CAAC said it had sent a team of officials and the Guangxi fire services to deal with the fire and crash aftermath. It is not yet clear what the cause of the crash was.

Videos showing the aftermath of a plane that crashed in a woodland area have been circulating on social media.

Posted on Twitter on Monday by user @breathing_funny, a clip shows the remains of an aircraft.

In a video that so far has been viewed over 20,000 times, people can be seen gathering around a piece of the plane that broke off during the crash.

"China hasn't lost a big plane for almost 20 years. It's too awful," breathing_funny wrote as a caption, according to a Google translation.

In another video posted to the user's page, a large fire can be seen raging in woodland as smoke rises into the sky.

"Looking at this situation, it is estimated that there is no hope to know the cause until the final accident analysis," breathing_funny wrote as a caption in a follow up tweet, according to a Google translation.

The Aviation Safety Network (ASN) also took to Twitter to announce they are investigating the incident.

"We are following multiple unconfirmed reports about a possible accident involving China Eastern Airlines flight #Mu5735 a Boeing 737-89P (B1791) en route from Kunming to Guanghzou, China," the ASN wrote on its Twitter page.

They also posted an image detailing information about the flight and its rapid descent when the plane was around 30,000 feet.

The aircraft involved was delivered to China Eastern from Boeing on June 5 2015 and had been in use for six years and 10 months, according to the ASN website.

Newsweek has contacted China Eastern for comment.
