Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is the first major downloadable content expansion for CD Projekt RED's sprawling open world game Cyberpunk 2077. During a new edition of Night City Wire, the developer's news program dedicated to all things Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED revealed that the add-on is in the works and is set to debut in 2023. There was also a very quick trailer to accompany the news.

The "spy-thriller" expansion, as Phantom Liberty is described, will be set in a new area of Night City. The trailer shown during Night City Wire didn't give up the ghost too much, however. At just about a minute long, there was just enough to get players interested, with more details to come at a later date.

Playable protagonist V, who can be either male or female, is heard taking an oath to serve the New United States of America, while facing off against, presumably, the president, or someone of that ilk. Keanu Reeves reprises his role as Johnny Silverhand to voice his opinion that it's not a great idea.

Depending on the way players completed Cyberpunk 2077, their V (and Johnny) are left in a multitude of different states, which also begs the question: Which ending was the canon ending? We'll have to wait and see what happens with this expansion, which could feasibly take place during V's journey instead of after.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty — What to Expect

Unfortunately, there haven't been many details released surrounding the upcoming expansion, how long it will be, or what kind of content it will contain. From the trailer, we can at least ascertain that Johnny Silverhand will play a role in the narrative, and he isn't exactly pleased with V's decision to help out with the New United States of America.

We also know players will be taken to a new part of Night City to explore, though there are scant pieces of information about what that will entail. Night City is already quite large as it is, so this update will ensure it grows even bigger, with additional terrain.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be available in 2023 on Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia, and PC. However, it appears it will not be available on last-gen consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The final update for last-gen consoles comes in the form of Patch 1.6, or the Edgerunners Update, and will conclude new content for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions.

The Edgerunners Update will introduce a variety of new additions to the game, mostly inspired by the upcoming Netflix anime series Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners. Players can wear the jacket seen on protagonist David Martinez as well as utilize cross-platform progression, clothing transmog options and a Roach Race arcade game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available to purchase now.
