Netflix's Dead to Me began its drama with a car collision that killed the husband of Jen Harding (played by Christina Applegate). Season 2 ends with another accident that leaves Jen herself fighting for life just as things seemed to be starting to get back to normal for her and Judy (Linda Cardellini).
At the end of the previous season of the Netflix show, another murder was committed when Jen killed Judy's former fiance Steve (James Marsden). She told Judy that this was in self-defence, though this was not quite true. While Steve began Dead to Me Season 2 in the freezer and ended it being dug up from the park, Marsden still had a role to play in the most recent episodes. The X-Men actor returned for Season 2 as Ben, the recovering alcoholic identical twin of Steve who ends up developing feelings for Jen.
Eventually, Jen decides that she has to confess everything to the police after her son Charlie (Sam McCarthy) becomes a suspect after finding Steve's car and joyriding in it. Jen writes letters for her sons and Judy, who she wants to look after her kids when she goes to jail.

Jen confesses everything to Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva) and takes her to the place where she buried Steve. However, she cannot find his exact place of burial, and Perez tells her that she is not going to turn her in. Perez has family trauma in her own past, and sees Jen's killing of Steve as a woman doing what it takes to protect her kids. Plus, a suitcase of evidence has emerged that makes it seem as if the mob killed Steve.
At this point, it seems that Jen's problems are over, and she returns to her grief group and starts working through some of her demons. Then, when Judy finds money hidden behind her paintings, it seems the pair will finally have the means to totally start anew.
However, karma is waiting for Jen. Just after she learns that the stop sign she has been campaigning for has finally been put up (something she wanted since the start of Dead to Me), Ben plows into their car while under the influence, after he receives a mysterious phone call. We assume that this call is letting him know that his brother's body has been found.
Though Jen is confirmed not to be dead at the end of Dead to Me Season 2, the implications of this car crash are sure to play out if Netflix renews the show for Season 3. Though the police may have all but dropped the case, the discovery of the body is likely to start Ben investigating the case again, meaning that Jen and Judy may have to kill again to cover up what they have done.
However, showrunner Liz Feldman told The Hollywood Reporter podcast: "I don't wanna just have to pull a murder out of my pocket every two seconds just to justify the existence of the show."
Dead to Me Season 2 is streaming now on Netflix.
