A blind and deaf dog has been adopted just in time for Christmas, after more than a year in shelter.

Less than three weeks ago (November 30), Newsweek told you about 5-year-old Buddy. Our story captured the heart of Kelly Nagy, 45, who already has a disabled dog that looks almost identical to Buddy.

When reading about Buddy, Nagy felt drawn to him as he was similar to her pet Teddy, an American Pit Bull Terrier, who is also deaf with limited vision.

"My partner Steph Bass, 43, and I felt like we couldn't let Buddy be in the shelter when we knew we had space in our home," said Nagy. "The article motivated us to rethink our plans."

While Nagy and Bass have always been huge dog lovers, they had little plans to extend their furry family so soon after losing their senior dogs.

"The story prompted me to change my mind on waiting to adopt another dog, as I was planning on waiting until after the holidays were over, and then I thought, I am very invested in Buddy finding a home, why am I not thinking the obvious and that I may be his perfect home," she explained.

On December 12, the couple went to visit Buddy and brought Teddy along as they wanted to make sure the canines were compatible. The trio instantly fell in love with Buddy and decided to adopt him from Main Line Animal Rescue in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania.

Now, one week later, he has quickly settled into his new home in Morton and the dogs are set to have a "wonderful life together."

Nagy told Newsweek: "He is doing so great and already learning the layout of the house and yard. He is so sweet, so good, and so smart!"

Nagy even believes there could be a chance that the pair of canines are related.

She explained: "Teddy and Buddy obviously have a lot in common, but they also look so much alike—other than their size difference as Teddy has 20lbs on Buddy.

"It has made us wonder if they are closely related.

"We estimated that Teddy is five or six years old. We had Teddy's DNA tested, and he has quite a few relatives in the area, so we have bought a test kit for Buddy already!"

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Some dogs, like Buddy, have found their forever home before Christmas, but this isn't the case for all; Enzo, a Labrador mix, may be spending his fourth Christmas in a shelter.
