Two planes collided with each other on an airport runway, when the wing of one hit another parked aircraft.

Spirit Airlines flight 655 was stationary at a gate on the runway at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in Ohio when it ended up making contact with the wing tip of Delta flight DL2577.

Both of the airlines said that there were no injuries reported on either aircraft after the accident, which took place at around 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The 180 people being carried on the Delta flight had a four-hour delay to their journey as the airline worked to organize another plane for them to continue on their way, according to a Delta spokesperson. Passengers on the Spirit flight also had to get off the plane so that it could be carefully examined.

Delta's full statement said: "Delta teams are working to reaccommodate customers to their final destination to Atlanta tonight after the wingtip from Delta flight DL2577 made contact with a parked aircraft at CLE. We apologize for any inconvenience caused."

The airline added that it will be investigating exactly what happened.

Spirit Airlines said: "Spirit Airlines flight 655 (CLE-LAX) was parked at the gate in Cleveland (CLE) and in the process of boarding when the wing tip of another airline's aircraft made contact with our aircraft.

"Our Guests deplaned normally through the jet bridge, and no injuries to Spirit Guests or Team Members were reported.

"Safety is our top priority, and the aircraft was removed from service to be thoroughly inspected by our maintenance team. We are reaccommodating our Guests with alternate travel arrangements as quickly as possible."

It comes just over a month after a person was hospitalized following a plane crash at the same airport on April 6.

The incident involved a small private aircraft that touched down on the runway, bounced and then nose-dived into it, according to state troopers quoted by WHIO-TV7.

Two people were in the plane, one of whom was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board began an investigation the collision. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport closed the airfield affected overnight.

At the time, the airport posted on social media: "Thank you to our emergency responders and entire airport operations team for your swift response to ensure our passengers, airport users and employees' safety."
