Shortly before his death, rapper DMX was reportedly planning a surprise wedding for his fiancée.

DMX, whose birth name is Earl Simmons, died at the age of 50 on April 9. The Grammy-nominated rapper had spent a week on life support in the hospital after suffering what was described as a catastrophic cardiac arrest.

Family, including the rapper's 15 children, and friends paid tribute to DMX at a memorial service at the Barclays Center in New York City last month.

His fiancée Desiree Lindstrom, who is mother to the rapper's four-year-old son Exodus Simmons, told Fox5 that about a week before he died, DMX had told her to buy a white dress.

She assumed it was for a beach vacation, but now knows that he had been planning to take her on a trip and surprise her with a wedding.

The couple met 10 years ago in Arizona and enjoyed a first date at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, reported Fox 5 on Monday.

Lindstrom described DMX as her "everything" and said coping with the loss of her best friend and the love of her life has been "very hard."

She said she had stayed by his bedside day and night during his stay at White Plains Hospital, north of New York City, and was convinced he would wake up.

"I wasn't going to give up on him. I didn't care if I was looking like a walking zombie, I wasn't going to give up," she told the station. "I had hope, faith, he was going to get up."

She said some of the hardest moments have been with her son, particularly when they go to the rapper's grave.

"He tells me he wants to go to Heaven with his daddy and visit him," Lindstrom told the station.

She also revealed that 2021 had been a turning point for the rapper, and that he had been embracing family life and looking forward to the future when he was hospitalized.

"I really feel like he was coming to a peace, he was trying to fix everything," she said.

Since his death, her son has been a source of comfort to her. "Some days I don't want to get out of bed, but I know I have Exodus to take care of," she said.

Exodus is also the name of a posthumous DMX album set for release on May 28. His last album, Undisputed, was released in 2012.

"My brother X was one of the most pure and rare souls I've ever met," Swizz Beatz, the album's producer, said. "He lived his life dedicated to his family and music. Most of all, he was generous with his giving and loved his fans beyond measure."

The album will feature collaborations with Jay-Z, Nas, Bono, Alicia Keys and more.
