A Newfoundland dog by the name of Chewy has been turning heads on social media with his unusually impressive ball skills.
Chewy has been a part of Amy Savino's family ever since the day they brought him home as a puppy just over a year ago.
"He loves children, is very playful and a true gentle giant," Savino told Newsweek. Chewy's playful nature is what led to his family discovering the Newfoundland's penchant for playing "keepie uppie" with a balloon.
"When he was a puppy the kids were all playing the game and out of nowhere Chewy joined in," Savino said. "All the children started laughing and that's when we found out he had a skill!"

An eagerness to play fetch and other canine games might be born out of a sense of seemingly boundless energy but it can also be a sign of intelligence.
A 2022 study published in Animal Cognition identified a link between high levels of playfulness and giftedness in other specific cognitive canine traits.
Chewy certainly has a gift when it comes to this particular game. Savino explained: "Not only does he like the balloon thrown to him but he also understands the concept that it can't touch the ground."
Chewy's eagerness to play the game may also be motivated by the fact his owner's daughter, Hannah, aged 8, is such a big fan.
In a video posted to social media by Savino alongside the headline "when your dog is a master of can't touch the ground" the happy pair can be seen playing with the balloon together. "They are very close and act like siblings," she said. "Chewy loves to walk them to the bus stop every morning and wait till they get on!"
Although the balloon game is just one of many outdoor activities the Newfoundland engages in. "He also enjoys swimming, going on hikes and boat rides!" Savino said.
Chewy's owner has her own theory as to why he likes keeping the balloon in the air so much. "I think he enjoys it just because he can join in the fun and gets such a positive reaction," she said. "Everyone cheers for him and it's almost like you can see him smiling."

Chewy's current record for keeping the balloon in the air stands at 15. Not that Savino and her family are keeping count. To them it's all just a bit of fun and another reason why their pet pooch has become an indispensable part of their lives.
"The best thing about having a Newfoundland or any dog is their companionship," Savino said. "We chose this breed because of their love for children and sweet disposition and he has surpassed all expectations. He truly is part of the family."
