Dolphins' Tyreek Hill on Playing Former Team: 'They Going to Get This Work'

Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill didn't shy away from some friendly trash talk on Thursday when reporters asked him about playing against his former team.

Hill spent his first six seasons in the National Football League with the Kansas City Chiefs and won a Super Bowl with the team. He was traded from the Chiefs to the Dolphins in the 2022 offseason for five draft picks, including a 2022 first-round selection.

Hill said he would've rather played the game at Arrowhead Stadium but is eager to face his teammates in an essential matchup in Germany this week.

"It doesn't really matter where we play at," Hill told reporters Thursday via ESPN. "I mean, obviously it would've been great to play in K.C., but it really doesn't matter where we play at, you feel me? They going to get this work wherever."

Hill expects the banter to be fun considering that he parted ways with the team in an amicable fashion.

"It is going to be trash talk," Hill told reporters. "But it's going to be fun though. It's going to be like, 'I want to see you do good, but we going to bust your ass at the same time, though.' It is going to be one of those things like backyard football with your brothers."

The Chiefs agreed to let Hill seek trade options after their contract extension talks broke down. Hill ended up signing a four-year, $120 million contract extension with $72.2 million in guaranteed money.

"I'm kind of glad that [the trade] happened," Hill told reporters. "Obviously the situation that I'm in is great. I've got great teammates. My family is from Miami, and also, I accomplished one of my goals of being one of the highest paid in the league. So, everything's great. Life is great, man. Never can take anything for granted. So, I can't look back. Always got to look forward. That's my mindset."

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told reporters on Tuesday via Zoom that he believed the trade was prosperous for both teams.

"Obviously, Tyreek's an incredible player and has done very well in his time with the Dolphins, but I also think it benefited the Chiefs," Clark told reporters. "The draft compensation that we received, a lot of that draft capital was used to improve our defense, and I think this year we're seeing that it did indeed work out well. We've got a number of really talented young defensive players, many of whom were part of that trade."

The stats seem to back Hunt's claim. Hill racked up 1,710 yards on 119 catches in his first season with Miami and is on pace to eclipse both marks this season. Through eight games, he's already beaten his 2022 touchdown mark of seven, averaging a score per game. With nearly half the season complete, Hill leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns and receiving yards.

In their first season without Hill, Kansas City also found success, winning their second Super Bowl in three seasons. The Chiefs are 6-2 entering Sunday's game, tied with three other teams, including Hill's Dolphins, for the best record in the AFC.

The Chiefs are a 1.5-point favorite against Hill's Dolphins, according to Thursday's odds on BetMGM Sportsbook.
