Former President Donald Trump has mocked CNN's Don Lemon and dubbed him the "dumbest man on TV" in his latest social media post.

Trump's comments come as CNN begins a shakeup of the news network, a move that has divided its viewers.

Last week, it was revealed that Lemon's show, Don Lemon Tonight, would no longer be aired as he takes on a new role on a morning show instead.

Posting on his social media platform on Monday, Truth Social, Trump wrote: "A small step for television, a giant step for mankind.

"Don Lemon, often called 'the dumbest man on television' having made even Lebron James look smart during their interview two years ago, has been FIRED from his prime time evening spot on CNN.

"Extremely low ratings and will be thrown into their 'Death Valley' morning show.

"I assume this means a BIG salary cut prior to his Complete & total future firing from ratings challenge (to put it mildly!) CNN. Good Luck Don, you'll need it. MAGA!"

Following speculation that he was fired or demoted from his role, Lemon spoke on CNN on September 16 to clarify what his future at the network would be and the conversation he had with Chris Licht, CNN's new boss.

Speaking to CNN's Lauren Coates, he said: "Let me just say, it is bittersweet for me because I work with one of the best teams in this business.

"We built this show out of nothing, this show was not supposed to exist."

Lemon then continued to praise many of his co-workers for their contribution to making his show work.

He then dismissed rumors that he had been fired and said he was given a choice about moving to the morning show.

"I was presented with an opportunity that I can't pass up at this network," he continued.

"We have a new boss who is a morning show impresario. He wants a morning show that will kick off the editorial direction of the network every single day. I am honored that he asked me to do it."

Lemon then went on to address directly the speculations that had begun circulating no social media.

"For all of those who are out there and saying he moved me... He asked me, and I said yes. I could have said no.

"This is my show, I have a contract for this show, I decided I would take him up on that and take this journey with him."

Lemon also addressed the concerns that CNN would be moving closer to right-wing and move away from its historically left-leaning coverage of the news.

"This is not someone saying 'you must move to the right Don Lemon, you must not give so much of your perspective.' None of that has happened," he said.

"All of that is fodder for Twitter, which is not real, so stop it. I was not demoted, none of that.

"This is an opportunity, this is a promotion, this is an opportunity for me."

Still attempting to keep the conversation lighthearted, Lemon said the shift in schedule would take some getting used to saying that he had been doing the night shift since the 1990s.

Newsweek has contacted Donald Trump's office for comment.
