Donald Trump Accused of Spreading Fake Nancy Pelosi Quote in Attack Calling House Speaker 'Crazy'

President Donald Trump has been accused of misrepresenting a statement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in his latest attack on his impeachment inquiry.

In a late night tweet, the president claimed that: "Nancy Pelosi just stated that 'it is dangerous to let the voters decide Trump's fate.' @FoxNews In other words, she thinks I'm going to win and doesn't want to take a chance on letting the voters decide. Like Al Green, she wants to change our voting system. Wow, she's CRAZY!

Trump's was referencing a letter that Pelosi wrote to House Democrats circulated on Monday in which she actually said: "The weak response to these hearings has been, 'Let the election decide.' That dangerous position only adds to the urgency of our action, because the president is jeopardizing the integrity of the 2020 elections."

Trump's midnight tweet, as noted by Mediaite, repeated paraphrasing made by Fox News host Mike Emanuel an hour earlier. The tweet left out the context of Pelosi's reference to the 2020 election and put words in quote marks as if they were Pelosi's own.

Media watchers picked up on the discrepancy between Trump's tweet and what Pelosi actually said in the letter.

The Huffington Post journalist Ryan Reilly retweeted to his 109,000 followers Trump's quote, with the message: "Here's what Pelosi actually said." CNN's Brian Stelter also wrote: "What Pelosi actually said," followed by the letter.

Journalist Jonathan Katz tweeted: "No, she said that the crimes you've admitted to are jeopardizing the integrity of the 2020 elections. In other words, you're trying to rig it."

On Sunday, Pelosi dared Trump to testify before the House Intelligence Committee, telling the CBS show Face the Nation that he has "every opportunity to present his case."

"But it's really a sad thing. What the president did was so much worse than what even Richard Nixon did," she told the program.

In response to Pelosi's interview, the president is said to be considering submitting his own testimony, according to CBS News.

This week in the impeachment inquiry a number of key witnesses will face questioning.

Jennifer Williams, adviser to Vice President Mike Pence, whom the president has attacked as a "never Trumper," is scheduled to give evidence on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, U.S. Ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland will face questions from Democrats and Republicans, having emerged during testimony by witnesses as a key point of contact between Trump and Ukraine.

Democrats will be looking for him to back claims that he was instructed by Trump to make $400 million in military aid conditional on Kiev probing whether Ukrainians meddled in the 2016 election and investigating former Vice President Joe Biden, CNN reported.

The Democrats have also scheduled testimony from diplomatic aide David Holmes for Thursday.
