Laura Loomer, a far-right independent journalist and ally to former President Donald Trump, has claimed that the former president will be assassinated by the so-called "Deep State."
Loomer, whose online content is often shared by Trump, took to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday to share the news that the Supreme Court rejected a request made by the lead prosecutor in Trump's federal election subversion case to expedite the former president's appeal. Trump has pleaded not guilty in the case and says it is politically motivated.
Earlier this month, Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over Trump's case, ruled that Trump did not have presidential immunity—an argument made by Trump's lawyers in an effort to throw out the case. Trump then appealed Chutkan's decision and instead of the appeal going to a federal appellate court, Department of Justice's Special Counsel Jack Smith asked the Supreme Court to hear the case. By skipping over the appellate court, Smith hoped the appeal process would go faster and that the trial date set for March 4 would stand.
"This is a major blow to Jack Smith and the Deep State who were hoping to try President Trump before the 2024 election by bypassing an appeal," Loomer wrote on X.

Deep State is a term used to describe a group of influential government figures or the military believed to be involved in the secret manipulation of government policy. People on the far-right have used the term when promoting the conspiracy theory that powerful people have been trying to undermine Trump's agenda since his successful 2016 presidential run.
In a follow-up post, Loomer wrote, "Jack Smith won't be getting his March 4 trial date. The Deep State is going to try to kill Donald Trump. He must be protected at all costs. #MAGA #Trump2024."
Newsweek could not independently verify Loomer's claims. There is no evidence of a planned assassination attempt on Trump. Newsweek reached out to Loomer and Trump's campaign via email for comment.
Trump is the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 election. While he faces a slew of criminal charges, all of which he has pleaded not guilty to, he has maintained a dedicated base known as "MAGA," from his Make America Great Again movement.
On January 6, 2021, a mob of Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., while Congress was attempting to certify the election. The riot erupted after Trump made baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him by Joe Biden and the Democrats via widespread voter fraud.
Numerous election audits across the country, including some carried out by Trump's own supporters, have shown that the election results were accurate. Republican officials at the state and federal level, including some who Trump appointed or endorsed, have rejected the claims.
The DOJ indicted Trump in August on four federal felony counts in the federal election subversion case, including conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights, all stemming from his activities surrounding the Capitol riot.
