Many may have found themselves wishing during the last few months of the coronavirus that they could just fast-forward to Christmas, but some Netflix viewers are trying to do just that by viewing Elf, the holiday movie starring Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel.

On Tuesday, July 7, Elf was the 8th most-watched movie on Netflix U.S., alongside titles like 365 Dni and the new Netflix original Desperados. This is despite the fact that we are just under half a year away from Christmas 2020, which is exactly 170 days away.

Writing on Twitter, one user asked: "With how 2020 is going is it acceptable to watch elf on netflix in july," and clearly the answer is "very acceptable" to thousands of Netflix subscribers.

Another fan tweeted, "Why did no one tell me Elf is on @netflix now like it's official Christmas in July!!" Another Twitter user pointed out that it was strange that the streamer decided to make the movie available now when it was not on the service at Christmas. They wrote: "WHY wasn't 'ELF' on Netflix last December? Hmm?! Hmm?! It better stay there for the rest of my life."

One possible reason that fans may be thinking of Elf in July is because Netflix jogged a generation's memory about the film when they released a new movie starring Will Ferrell featuring elves. In Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (minor spoilers) Sigrit (played by Rachel McAdams) believes in elves and leaves them offerings whenever she wants something to happen–which later leads to these elves helping Ferrell's character out of a major scrape.

Netflix is not the only streamer offering holiday movies this summer Hallmark is currently running a 'Christmas in July' movie marathon, which sees the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries airing 250 of their holiday romances and mysteries from now until July 27.

The true mystery, however, is why Elf has come to Netflix now in the first place. The 2003 movie was not on Netflix's list of movies coming to the streamer in July, and was supposed to be coming to HBO Max on June 1.

According to one Twitter user, it seems as if the movie came to HBO Max in June, only to leave the service shortly after. They wrote: "Titanic, The Hobbit trilogy and Elf just got added to HBO Max on June 1 and they are already in the Last Chance selection." According to JustWatch, the movie is not currently on HBO Max, and those other movies have also left the streamer just after they arrived.

However, Elf's streaming service shuffle may be that the movie may also not be around for long on Netflix, so perhaps viewers should take the opportunity now before the movie disappears again.
