The status of soccer as the national sport of England gave Twitter users ammunition to mock the team for managing only to hang on for a goalless tie in their World Cup clash with the United States.

On the heels of England's rampant 6-2 victory in the opener against Iran, English fans jeered their team after a labored performance at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, where they were outplayed by the U.S. side for significant sections of Friday's match.

"England fans when we're trying to score a goal but American fans are chanting "DE-FENCE DE-FENCE," wrote Solyman Jamy on Twitter, with a clip of a soccer manager in England holding his head in his hands. The sport that the English call football means something different in the U.S.

"This SOCCER tie is so embarrassing for England. Imagine if England came and played American Football vs the USA and we tied that game," tweeted gaming athlete Cryptic Incognito to his 441,000 followers.

Gaming video creator Stone Mountain tweeted: "I'm just glad to know USA is just as good as England at soccer."

That sentiment was shared by the account of Cock Sources in the tweet: "It's officially SOCCER now. "Imagine if England came and played American Football vs the USA and we tied."

"That's yalls main sport??? LOLLLLLLLLLL," wrote Twitter user timthetatman to his 2.7 million followers, while others took a swipe at how a country that considers itself the home of the game could not do better against American opposition, which would view the result as a win.

"USA BEAT ENGLAND 0-0," tweeted GM Malc by a War of Independence meme. "It happened again," wrote BR Football next to a mocked-up image of a newspaper headline "USA wins 0-0" in what was "the greatest tie against the English since 2010."

This referred to the surprise 1-1 result between the two soccer teams at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The football account 433 tweeted a video of a sleeping fan, and Irish Twitter user John Kenny posted a clip from the cartoon The Simpsons, which mocked the boredom that a soccer game might cause, with the message " England v USA. Let's go soccer."

Republican representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) also weighed in with his view of the game. "No wonder i can't watch soccer. Just forced myself to watch USA vs England. 0-0. I mean," he tweeted.

All four teams in Group B are in with the chance of progressing to the final 16. On Tuesday, England will face Wales, while the United States will be hoping for a good result against Iran.
