Fans of the hit show YOU, now housed on Netflix, can rejoice in the promise of a second season, and it may be here sooner than they think. The stalker/serial killer show paints a charming picture of Joe, the main character, though he's manically obsessive and incredibly creepy. In Season 1, viewers watched Joe kill, prey and manipulate to get closer to the things he wanted. And he did so successfully which a shocking, sickening end that proved his story wouldn't end, just change.
The concept of the ultra-charming psychopath is hip right now. From You to Netflix documentary Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, viewers can't get enough of the creepy, yet unexplainable draw to personalities with devastating twists. YOU plays on that concept, but issues a note of warning. Even its stars, like John Stamos and Penn Badgley, who talked to Newsweek on the thriller's success, spoke to the learning experience the show can provide: it begs viewers to look below the surface into the dark, red flags the charming and attractive lead personality truly holds.
YOU is based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, and luckily for fans of the storyline, Kepnes has already released a second novel in the series. That means, not only does Season 2 have a set plot, but viewers can get their hands on a copy of the novel, Hidden Bodies, to get a better idea of where Joe will be in Season 2.
What we know is Joe will relocate. He's going to try to live a life in Los Angeles, away from the "Hidden Bodies" of his past and away from his crime and memories of Beck. But from what viewers know of Joe, he can be obsessive. It's just a matter of time before Joe finds another subject to prey on. That's what the book summary teases.
"In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts," the book summary, published on Amazon reads. "He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can't stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don't always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he's more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried."
There is no official release date for YOU Season 2, but it has already been promoted via the show's social media accounts. Newsweek spoke to Badgley in January, and he said he was gearing up to start filming the series again. While YOU is not an original Netflix production—it premiered on Lifetime with low ratings—it will return as a Netflix-only series.
