Fans have voiced their shock at the "amazing" similarities between a young Prince William and his mother, Princess Diana, after clips of the two royals shown side-by-side have gone viral with over 4 million views on social media platform TikTok.

The clips, posted by TikTok user angelskyfire, show a 16-year-old William taking part in the christening ceremony of his cousin and godson Prince Konstantine Alexios Of Greece in 1999, and Diana at various events during the early 1990s.

The post has gone viral after the 25th anniversary of the princess' untimely death in a high-speed Paris car crash was marked on August 31. It has since gained over 350,000 likes and 1,000 comments from fans noting the numerous similarities between mother and son, including the way they famously looked up beneath their blonde fringes.

"Because of her the royal family got good genes," wrote one user.

"He really looks like his mother ????," noted another, with a further commenting: "Never realized he also did the famous Diana eye move."

The British royals are related to the Greek royals through a number of familial links, the closest of which being through William's grandfather, Prince Philip, who was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark on the island of Corfu in 1921.

For the christening, William appeared with his arm in plaster supported by a sling. The royal had fractured his finger playing rugby, requiring delicate surgery to pin it back into place.

A number of videos showing Princess Diana and her sons have gone viral this year, marking the anniversary of her death.

Though the date passed relatively quietly in comparison to the 20th-anniversary commemorations five years ago, both William and Prince Harry have paid respects to their mother in speeches throughout the year.

Most explicitly, Harry said in a speech marking a charity polo event in the days leading up to August 31 that he hoped it would be a "day of memories," and "I want it to be a day to share the spirit of my mum with my family, with my children, who I wish could have met her."

Diana remains a significantly popular member of the British royal family today, boosted in the public's consciousness by recent depictions in popular culture.

Most recently, Diana was played on-screen by Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki in season five of Netflix's hugely anticipated royal drama The Crown.

Dramatizing the turbulent years of the early 1990s in which Diana and Prince Charles' relationship publicly dissolved, fans have shown an interest in engaging with the princess' legacy online.

The most recent YouGov popularity poll on the monarchy in Britain showed just how strong the legacy of Diana is, with poll respondents ranking her the fourth most popular royal overall. The princess ranked behind William and wife Kate Middleton who are in first and second position respectively, and then Princess Anne.

King Charles, Diana's ex-husband, came in at fifth, and Queen Camilla was placed sixth.
