Netflix has now released its latest thriller Fatal Affair, which updates the Fatal Attraction plot by having a man become the one obsessed by a woman. Omar Epps and Nia Long have been cast as that man and woman, in their third pairing in a movie. The trailer for the movie was released in early July, which gives viewers an idea of the lengths that Epps' character David will go to to be with Long's Ellie.
What is the plot of Fatal Affair?
The official Netflix synopsis reads: "Ellie (Nia Long) tries to mend her marriage with her husband Marcus (Stephen Bishop) after a brief encounter with an old friend, David (Omar Epps), only to find that David is more dangerous and unstable than she'd realized."
In the trailer, we see that Ellie starts a new high-powered job, where she meets David, a friend she has not seen for decades. After the pair catch up, they plan to go their separate ways. However, David has other ideas and refuses to let her go, in a plot similar to that from the Glenn Close/Michael Douglas classic Fatal Attraction.
In that 1987 movie, Close's character goes as far as to boil Douglas' character's pets, but viewers will have to tune in to Fatal Affair to see what David has in store for Ellie.
Who stars in Fatal Affair?
At one point in the trailer, Ellie and David say they haven't seen each other for nearly 20 years, and it has been nearly that long since Fatal Affair co-stars Nia Long and Omar Epps starred in a movie together.
In 2004, the pair both starred in the Jude Law movie Alfie, where Long is the ex-girlfriend whose Epps character is trying to win back. In the 1999 movie In Too Deep, meanwhile, Long plays the girlfriend of Epps' undercover cop.
In an interview with Pay or Wait on YouTube, Long (who produced this movie) revealed that this history between the pair of them is crucial to the movie. She said: "We were both a part of a very important time in Black storytelling and filmmaking so when I read the script I wanted to give my fans something that they would be excited about, to see the two of us together.
"The women who were 20 when I was 20, they're now almost 50 and they're raising children or they're married...I've grown up with these people. So I knew that Omar was perfect for this, I wanted him for this, I called him for this and here we are."
Aside from their work together, Long is best known for her roles in seminal Black films from the '90s like Boyz n the Hood, Friday and Soul Food. She has also starred in TV shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Empire and NCIS: Los Angeles. Epps, meanwhile, got his start in Juice, Higher Learning and Love & Basketball, but is best known for his role as Dr. Eric Foreman in House. Since that ended in 2012, he has starred in Shooter and This Is Us, and will soon star in the Power sequel Raising Kanan.
Also starring in Fatal Affair are Criminal Minds' Stephen Bishop as Ellie's husband Marcus. Aubrey Cleland, Maya Stojan and Kj Smith also star in the Netflix movie.
