"These ongoing conversations have given us an opportunity to orchestrate a seamless and productive way for me to leave the show."

He went on: "I would like to express the gratitude and admiration I have had working with Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski.

"I'm extremely proud of the work we have done together and put the development of this show, and my character Jess, at the top of my professional experience list.

"I wish the show, and its cast & crew, the greatest success in the future. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play Jess; he is a good man."

McMahon's character is the head of the FBI unit that is assigned to the most extreme cases and works towards capturing the agency's most wanted criminals.

The actor's final episode in the role will air on March 8, but it has not yet been revealed how his character will be written out of the show.

On Monday, January 24 Deadline announced that Dylan McDermott had been cast in a lead role in FBI: Most Wanted as McMahon's replacement.

The American Horror Story star will play an as-yet-unannounced character and he will make his debut on the show in April, in Episode 17 of Season 3.

While details of his role are being kept under wraps, it has been confirmed that the actor will portray a new character.

McDermott currently stars in Law & Order: Organized Crime, and his role in the NBC drama will come to a natural end to allow for his transition to FBI: Most Wanted.
