A girl was seen being racially abused by her fellow students on a Florida school bus in a video that was shared on social media.

The short clip appeared to show a male student repeatedly using racial slurs as he called the girl to the back of the bus. He is heard saying "hey n*****, get back here," before another derogatory term is used.

The girl, wearing a face mask, is then seen moving to the back of the bus as other students laugh and repeat the slurs.

La'Twan Ferguson, a barber from Daytona Beach, Florida posted a 22-second video of the incident on his Facebook page earlier this week.

He wrote that it had been forwarded to him and that he would "get it handled."

Ferguson said he had reached out to the school the students attend. "Prayers for the young lady she needs protecting!" he added. "When y'all send me stuff like this you sent it to the right person. I'm not going to pass it along in the inbox I'm going to get it handled.

"I have already sent this to the school but I don't have any names to go on. This is completely [unacceptable]. We have to be better than this."

In an update to the post, he said the students involved had been identified.

Kelly Schulz, a spokesperson for Volusia County Schools, confirmed to Newsweek that the video involved students from New Smyrna Beach High School, who had been identified.

Schulz added that administration officials were "handling the situation", however, she said she could not comment on disciplinary actions due to privacy laws.

"Racism will not be tolerated. Whether face-to-face or on social media, there is no place for hate in our school district. We have zero tolerance for this behavior," the school district said in a statement.

"We are a diverse school district and we celebrate that diversity. This video does not reflect the culture of the Volusia County School District."

Ferguson told local TV station WESH2 that he believes incidents like the one on the school bus need to be shared publicly.

"I have a lot of friends that don't believe that racism exists, they don't believe it happens, so to be a voice and to be able to show and share that that this is going on and is something we need to be aware of, and not only that, but to address it when it happens," he said.

Ferguson said he was upset that the girl in the video did not immediately get any help from anyone on the bus.

"When he called her back using that word she actually went back there, so it seemed to me that this has been going on and she didn't have any help," he added. "So I felt some hurt and a lot of anger that this is 2020 and we're still dealing with this stuff."
