Fox News co-host Geraldo Rivera criticized House Republicans on Thursday for opening an investigation into the Biden family, rather than focusing on inflation and other issues the nation is facing.

"Republicans get control of the House & the first they do is...No not explore how to tame inflation or crime etc. They launch an investigation of President & Hunter Biden," Rivera wrote in a tweet. "Boring. Divisive. Retro. Unwanted. Zero positive impact on the lives of Americans. Is this the real Red Wave?"

The remarks by Rivera comes shortly after Republicans in the House of Representatives took control of the majority and announced an investigation into President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

On Thursday morning, Republican Representative James Comer, a ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform announced a probe into the Biden's that will investigate the business dealings between Joe and Hunter, specifically suspicious activity reports, or SARs, which are used by banks to notify the U.S. Treasury Department of possible criminal activity.

"One SAR generated by an American bank to the Treasury Department connects Hunter Biden and his business associates to human trafficking, among other illegal activities," Comer said. "As part of our investigation, we have evidence that the finances, credit cards, and bank accounts of Hunter and Joe Biden were co-mingled, if not shared."

"We want to know what the Biden administration is trying to hide from the American people and why they're not being transparent," Comer added.

In a statement sent to Newsweek earlier on Thursday, Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House Counsel's Office also criticized the probe.

"Instead of working with President Biden to address issues important to the American people, like lower costs, congressional Republicans' top priority is to go after President Biden with politically-motivated attacks chock full of long-debunked conspiracy theories. President Biden is not going to let these political attacks distract him from focusing on Americans' priorities, and we hope congressional Republicans will join us in tackling them instead of wasting time and resources on political revenge," the statement said.

In addition to the announcement on Thursday, Hunter Biden has been facing a federal investigation for business activities he is alleged of conducting while his father was vice president under former President Barack Obama's administration. The Washington Post also reported last month that investigators had evidence that Hunter Biden attempted to purchase a gun and lied about his use of drugs.

Newsweek reached out to House Republican Chairwoman Elise Stefanik for comment.
