The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of fudge products after they were discovered to have traces of a major allergen not included in the listed ingredients.

Valley View Candies, based in Edgewood, Iowa, has issued a voluntary recall of all its fudge products, including Peanut Butter Fudge, Maple Nut Fudge, Chocolate Fudge, and Chocolate Walnut Fudge, due to the potential presence of undeclared egg traces. This is a precautionary measure; individuals with allergies or sensitivity to eggs may face serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. Newsweek has contacted Valley View Candies via phone call for comment.

The affected fudge items were distributed in several Iowa counties, including Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Johnson, Jones, and Linn. The affected products were sold through various retail outlets, such as Hy-Vee, Dollar Fresh, Otter Creek Store, Edgewood Locker, Benders, By the Spoonful, Country View Dairy, and Unionland Feeds, according to the FDA notice.

Packaged in 8-ounce clear, plastic, clam-shell containers, the recalled fudge products are labeled as Peanut Butter Fudge, Maple Nut Fudge, Chocolate Fudge, and Chocolate Walnut Fudge. The packaging is simple with black text on a white background.

The recall was initiated following the discovery that fudge items containing eggs were distributed with packaging that did not disclose the presence of eggs as an ingredient. Exactly how the allergen was discovered has not been revealed by the FDA. Valley View Candies said in the release that it was committed to ensuring the safety of its consumers and is taking swift action to address this issue. The company urges customers with egg allergies to exercise caution and to return the products to the point of sale for a full refund.

As of December 14, no illnesses related to the consumption of the fudge products have been reported, the FDA has said. For those with egg allergies, symptoms can often come on just a few minutes after eating a contaminated product. According to Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of an egg allergy can include skin rashes, hives, nasal congestion, and vomiting, nausea, chest tightness and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can lead to anaphylaxis, a rare condition in which the airway becomes blocked which requires an emergency visit to hospital.
