Thousands of internet commenters came to the defense of one woman who explained why she exposed her husband's unemployment at a family dinner.

In a viral Reddit post published on r/AmITheA**hole, Redditor u/lemkq339 (otherwise referred to as the original poster, or OP) said her husband insulted her breast size—which she says she's insecure about—in front of his entire family and detailed the explosive aftermath of her bombshell response.

Titled, "[Am I the a**hole] for what I said after my husband commented on my flat chest?" the viral post has received more than 17,000 votes and nearly 2,800 comments in the last 8 hours.

Beginning with the explanation that her husband was fired from his previous, "high paying" job because of a conflict with a coworker, the original poster said she has been handling all of the couple's expenses for months.

The original poster also said her husband's family had no idea about his lack of employment.

"They don't know he's unemployed because he thought they'll see him as a failure, especially his mom so he told me to keep it a secret," she wrote.

During a recent gathering, however, the original poster said she was forced to expose her husband's secret to his family.

Explaining that his cousin's fiancée revealed her plans to undergo breast enhancement surgery, the original poster said her husband turned the conversation and wondered aloud why she had never considered the procedure herself.

"He then turned to me, stared at my chest... and said, 'Hey, why don't YOU get a boob job, you're the one who needs it the most,'" she wrote. "I then turned to him and said, 'I'll get a boob job once YOU get an ACTUAL JOB since you've been unemployed for six months now!'"

"He stared at me in disbelief," she continued. "His mom began questioning him about being unemployed...he got so overwhelmed he went outside and stayed inside the car."

"He started yelling at me repeatedly...and accused me of turning his family against him," she added. "I argued that his comment about my chest was insulting, but he said he was giving me a piece of advice."

In the United States, surgeons perform more than 15 million cosmetic surgery procedures annually, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Of those 15 million procedures, more than 13 million are minimally invasive. And while people of all genders and ages undergo these procedures, the Cleveland Clinic reports that women account for 92 percent of cosmetic surgery patients each year.

Among the most popular cosmetic procedures are liposuction, nose reshaping, and eyelid surgeries. Breast augmentation, commonly referred to as a "boob job," remains within the five most popular procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

With the exception of 2020, a year in which COVID-19 restrictions halted elective surgeries, the number of cosmetic procedures has risen steadily over the last half decade, according to Healthline.

However, despite a growing number of yearly procedures and a greater willingness to go under the knife, suggestions of plastic surgery can perpetuate negative and harmful body image sentiments for both women and men.

In a pointed response to the viral Reddit post, which has received more than 10,000 votes, Redditor u/ColloidalSylver said that the original poster's husband was out of line for telling her to "get a boob job" and encouraged OP to reconsider her relationship.

"Let me get this straight. You have been keeping a roof over your heads, paying for this man's life, lying to protect his ego and he sat there and insulted you over a known insecurity not just to your face, but in front of his family?" they commented.

"[Not the a**hole]," they added. "Divorce him."

Redditor u/eugenesnewdream, whose comment has received more than 4,000 votes, relayed a similar message.

"[Not the a**hole] whatsoever," they wrote. "He f***ed around and found out."

"You should give him space," they added. "Permanent space, away from you."

In a separate comment, which has received nearly 1,500 votes, Redditor u/QuackLikeMe said that the original poster's husband got exactly what he deserved after insulting his wife.

"He seriously thinks he was just 'giving you advice' by telling you to get a boob job?" they wrote. "You've been supporting his dead weight for six months because he's ashamed of being out of work...now he's embarrassing you in front of his family."

"Let him stay with his friend," they added. "Someone else can support his insensitive, deadbeat a** for a while."
