An 11-year-old girl has been severely injured after surviving a plane crash in which four other people, including her father, were killed.
An investigation is underway into what caused the Island Airways commuter flight to crash in Beaver Island, Michigan, on Saturday, November 13.
The Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office said the plane was flying into Welke Airport when it went down, according to 9and10news.
The Petoskey News-Review said that the pilot and three adult passengers were killed, as well as two dogs.
The deceased victims have been named as Mike Perdue, as well as Kate Leese and Adam Kendall, who had just moved to the island and were reportedly planning on opening a vineyard together.
Perdue's 11 year-old daughter, who has not been identified, was the only person to have survived the crash.
She was taken to McClaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey by helicopter for treatment for her serious injuries.
A Coast Guard helicopter was conducting training when they received the emergency transmission from Beaver Island. According to The Petoskey News-Review, those on board the helicopter could see debris on the island and local emergency medical teams who were already responding to the scene of the crash.
"AirStationTraverse City aircrew members conducted a medevac this afternoon of 2 survivors of a commuter plane crash on Beaver Island, MI," the USCG Great Lakes Twitter account wrote.
"The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was conducting a training flight when they received an Emergency Locator Transmitter alert.
"The helicopter crew members landed and offered assistance and were able to hoist and transport an 11-year-old-female and a male adult to McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, MI.
"Chest compressions were being conducted on the 11-year-old en route to the hospital."
The male adult also taken to McLaren Hospital later died from his injuries, although it is unclear which one of the male victims this refers to.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the crash, said that the airplane that went down was a Britton-Norman BN-2A.
According to local media, this is the first time an Island Airways flight has crashed.
Plane crashes in the area are also rare. In February 2001, another airline operating out of Beaver Island crashed into a wooded area nearly two miles short of the airport runway during foggy weather.
Following the crash, a mother and her three children had to survive in the woods amid freezing temperatures for more than 15 hours until they were rescued.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been contacted for an update on the investigation.
