A golden retriever and his cat sibling have melted hearts online after being caught both cuddling and fighting at the same time by their owner.

In a video shared on TikTok on Sunday by the pets' owner under the username Jenniferburrell8, the golden retriever named Charlie can be seen resting on the floor, when the cat, Marshmallow, approaches and headbutts him.

After some resistance on the dog's side, who showed his teeth a couple of times, the two pets ended up cuddling.

A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that the majority of pet owners believe their dogs and cats live amicably. The authors of the study define amicable as "a friendly, mutual bond, which is recognizable through the use of affiliative behaviors, maintaining proximity and effective, non-aggressive communication between individuals."

But while most said their pets were living amicably, very few respondents scored their dog-cat relationship as close.

The study also found that cats were more likely to threaten dogs, and the sharing of food, toys or beds was infrequent. Although cats and dogs sometimes groomed each other, this behavior was not frequent.

Factors that influenced the success of their relationship included exposure to each other at an early age, especially for cats, the cat being first to arrive in the household, and cats being indoors.
