Will There Be Another Season of 'Grey's Anatomy'? What We Know About Season 19

It's been almost two decades since Grey's Anatomy premiered on ABC and the show is still going strong with Ellen Pompeo leading the cast as Dr. Meredith Grey.

Season 18 will conclude on Thursday, May 26, marking the show's 400th episode. Despite the milestone, already fans of the long-running hospital drama want to know if there is more Grey's Anatomy content to come in the future.

Will Grey's Anatomy Return For Season 19?

There is good news for fans of Grey's Anatomy—the show will be back for Season 19.

ABC announced the news back in January 2022, with creator Shonda Rhimes stating: "I couldn't be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard, and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season.

"This is a true testament to [showrunner] Krista Vernoff, the cast, the crew, and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey's Anatomy for so many years."

For the first time, the show's renewal may have come as a pretty big surprise to some fans, considering the show's biggest star, Ellen Pompeo, has shared her interest in the show ending,

Pompeo, who has been a part of the show since its inception in 2005 and now serves as co-executive producer, told Insider she was not against the show ending.

She shared: "I've been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end."

"​I feel like I'm the super naive one who keeps saying, 'But what's the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?' And everyone's like, 'Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.'"

Back in 2020 when Season 17 aired, Pompeo also shared her hopes for the end of the show, voicing her doubts to Variety over what the show could do "creatively". Her comments came at the same time her contract was up for renewal.

Grey's Anatomy remains the longest-running medical drama on American television, so if it was to end after Season 19, it would for sure leave a lasting legacy.

At the moment, Grey's Anatomy Season 19 does not have an official release date but ABC has confirmed it will be a part of its Fall 2022 schedule.

Who Will Star in Grey's Anatomy Season 19?

Depending on the events of the Season 18 finale, the entire main cast are expected to return for Grey's Anatomy Season 19.

This means Ellen Pompeo will be back as Meredith Grey, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, and James Pickens Jr as Richard Webber.

Also likely to return for Season 19 are Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, Kim Raver as Teddy Altman, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, and Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce.

What Will Happen in Grey's Anatomy Season 19?

At the moment, it is hard to predict what will happen in Grey's Anatomy Season 19 as Season 18 has not yet finished airing.

However, if the events of Season 18 are anything to go by, the 19th outing will see Meredith Grey back at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to help save the Grey Sloan's Residency program.

As per usual, audiences can expect to see a whole load of drama occurring in and outside of the hospital, as well as among Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital staff.

For now, fans will just have to wait a little while longer to find out what will happen next.
