Grown-ish is returning for Season 5, and this time around the Freeform comedy is shining the spotlight on a different member of the Johnson family.

The show, which is a spin-off of the hugely successful Black-ish, originally followed Rainbow and Andre Johnson's eldest daughter Zoey, played by Yara Shahidi, as she went to study at the fictional California University of Liberal Arts, or Cal U.

However, for the fifth season of Grown-ish, Zoey's younger brother Junior, played by Marcus Scribner, is taking center stage.

The new season is set to follow Junior as he begins his own journey at Cal U, though Zoey fans don't need to fret as she will also be featuring in the episodes.

Season 5 of Grown-ish will premiere on Freeform on July 20, with new episodes airing weekly on Wednesdays.

Who Is In the Cast of Grown-ish Season 5?

Grown-ish has enlisted a host of fresh new faces for the upcoming episodes.

Viewers may recognise singer Justine Skye and model Slick Woods who have both joined the cast alongside Tara Raani, Amelie Zilber, Ceyair Wright, and Matthew Sato.

Shahidi and Scribner are both of course reprising their roles as Zoey and Junior while Trevor Jackson and Diggy Simmons will be back as Aaron and Dough respectively.

Previous series regulars Francia Raísa (Ana), Chloe Bailey (Jazz), Halle Bailey (Sky), Emily Arlook (Nomi), Luka Sabbat (Luca), and Jordan Buhat (Vivek) are not returning but the Grown-ish show runners (Courtney Lilly and Zakiyyah Alexander) have stated that their absence may not be permanent.

"This new season isn't a goodbye, we are just expanding the world; there will always be an open door for them to return," they told TVLine.

We're sure extended member of the Johnson family will also be making appearances as the show progresses. Black-ish, which followed the lives of the Johnson family, came to an end after eight seasons earlier this year, but Tracee Ellis-Ross, who played matriarch Rainbow, and Anthony Anderson, who played Andre, will no doubt be popping up to visit Zoey and Junior.

What Is the Plot of Grown-ish Season 5?

Grown-ish Season 5 will follow Junior as he begins studying at Cal U and Zoey as she begins life post-graduation.

In an interview with TVLine, show runners Alexander and Lilly shared: "For season five, we're excited to dive deeper into the storylines of Zoey, Aaron, and Doug in their post-grad adventures and welcome a new dynamic class to Cal U, including Junior."

The official synopsis for the first episode reads: "Zoey returns to Cal U to support Junior's first day on campus but soon realizes that she may be missing her Cal U days more than she let on; after meeting his new classmates, Junior seeks to escape dorm life by attending Doug's white party."

Is There a Trailer for Grown-ish Season 5?

Freeform released a trailer for the batch of new episodes ahead of the season premiere, giving fans a glimpse at what's to come.

In the footage, Junior is seen arriving at Cal U, meeting his fellow students, oh, and being walked in on by his sister while getting intimate with a girl in the bathroom.

Grown-ish begins Wednesday, July 20 on Freeform. Episodes will be available to stream on Hulu after their original airing.
