Hailey Bieber Slammed Over 'Brownie Glazed Lips': 'Every Latina Did This'

Hailey Bieber is being called out for cultural appropriation after posting a makeup tutorial for "brownie glazed lips."

The model, 25—who is married to husband Justin Bieber, 28—was praised over the summer for her "glazed donut nails," but her latest trend has sparked backlash online.

In August, Bieber took to TikTok to show her followers how to get the look, writing in the caption, "The lip combo vibe I'm feeling for fall," she shared while tagging her skincare line Rhode.

The Arizona native first applied a brown lip liner, which she blended into her lips using her finger. She then added a clear gloss over top.

In a follow-up video one day later, she flaunted her pout in the mirror. "Ready for all the fall things including brownie glazed lips," she said at the time.

Although the TikToks were posted last month, users only recently have been pointing out that people of color have been doing this for years. That being said, Bieber never claimed to have invented it.

"Every Hispanic/Latina did this," one person commented, while another added, "Okay what's the name of the Latina you saw with this lip combo? Cause this has been a thing since the 90s lol."

A third, meanwhile, chimed in with a laughing emoji, "So basically the exact same color combo our tias have been using."

In a video posted on Monday that has since been viewed more than 2.7 million times, TikToker Benulus—who has more than 435,000 followers on the platform—said she received negative comments about her glossy lips prior to Bieber posting about it.

"Y'all are f***ing hypocrites," she said, adding, "Y'all s*** on my lips every single time I post, but a white woman does it, it's gonna become a trend, it's gonna be praised upon. And yeah I'm so flattered that Hailey Bieber always gets inspired by my community, by the POC [people of color] community, but it just irks me that because she's done it now, it's gonna become so trendy."

In a separate video, which racked up over 190,000 views, verified user Iris Beilin sarcastically wrote, "Wow!!! I have never seen something like this!!!"

Meanwhile, ZZHilton said in her clip, "It doesn't hit the right way when you try to pass on a brown lip liner as your own idea and call it a 'brownie' lip liner when this has very obviously been created by women of color, considering how long women of color had to fight for brands to stop naming darker shades after food."

Her post has been viewed more than 226,000 times.

Newsweek reached out to Bieber's representative for comment.

In an interview with Good Morning America, New York Times style reporter Sandra E. Garcia explained why Bieber's posts are problematic.

"[Black women and Latinas] are being looked at as lesser than any other woman just because of the way they decide to do their own makeup," she said. "But then another woman, a white woman, does the same thing, and her lip gloss is sold out and she's now the face of the trend."
