Police in New York City are investigating after a torso was found in a shopping cart in the borough of Brooklyn on Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department told Newsweek Thursday that an "unidentified adult female torso within a large bag" was found inside a shopping cart at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue an Atlantic Avenue. Police said the medical examiner will determine the cause of death in the incident, and that no further details are available at this time. Newsweek will update this story if and when more information about the investigation becomes available.

This is one of several similar incidents that have recently occurred across the country.

In Los Angeles on Tuesday, police said they were investigating after a woman's burned body was found in a shopping cart.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a man found a shopping cart on fire around 5 a.m. on Tuesday's in the city's Chinatown neighborhood. When the man tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, he realized there was a body inside the cart. Police later determined the body belonged to a 26-year-old woman.

"We can't say with 100 percent certainty that the person was actually murdered. There could be a bunch of different scenarios that played out prior to this," Los Angeles Police Lt. Ryan Rabbett said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In another incident last month, police in Philadelphia discovered pieces of a dismembered body that had been stuffed into a trash bag in the back of a U-Haul truck.

The discovery came after police responded to a burglary call and pulled over the the truck. The driver allegedly told police: "There's a body in the back."

Philadelphia police said that they found body parts in the back of the truck and more body parts in a nearby dumpster.

In January, police in New Orleans arrested a man after they found the remains of a torso in a freezer on his property. The freezer was located in a bus parked outside of his home. Police also said they found a head, flesh and fluid in the freezer, news station WDSU reported. The next week, the remains were identified as missing woman Julia Dardar.

The man who was arrested in connection with the discovery of the torso, Benjamin Beale, was believed to be living with Dardar, according to police. Beale was charged with second-degree murder, and was held on $1.4 million bond.
