A curious dog owner set up a couple of in-home cameras so that she could see what her dog, Sundae, gets up to when she's gone.
But after reviewing the "heartbreaking" footage, she determined she'll "never" again leave Sundae home alone.
Sundae's owner shared the sad footage to TikTok in December under the username Sunny Girl (@sundaetheblacklab). So far, the post has received more than 2 million views and over 378,000 likes.
At the beginning of the video, Sundae can be seen sleeping peacefully on her owner's bed.
"I thought she would just stay on my bed," said the video's narrator. Instead, Sundae lumbers into the living room and collapses onto the floor by the front door, and she remains planted there until her owner returns.
As it turns out, Sundae's response to being left alone is fairly common.
"Dogs are social creatures, so typically, if left alone, they're likely to sleep or look out the windows and keep an eye on things," Jennifer Freeman, DVM, told Elite Daily.
Some dogs also experience separation anxiety, which could result in destructive behavior.
"It's not fully understood why some dogs suffer from separation anxiety and others don't," said the Humane Society of the United States on its website. "But remember, your dog's behaviors are part of a panic response. Your dog isn't trying to punish you! They just want you to come home!"
To help alleviate stress, Freeman recommended that owners leave their dog with a "Kong toy" filled with frozen peanut butter or "treat-dispensing" toys.
"Another big thing is to not make a big deal right before you leave and right when you get home. Don't cue them with the big, mushy goodbyes, and then don't get overly excited when you come home [hard, I know]," Freeman added.
Thankfully, Sundae's behavior wasn't destructive. Still, many jokingly agreed with her owner's decision to never leave the house again.
"Stay home we'll pay the bills," wrote Your mom.
"Ma'am we demand you don't leave Sundae alone ever again," said Isabel.
"Next time just [call] one of us to babysit lol," offered Jasmine Michelle.
Sundae's owner took to the video's comments section to assure everyone that Sundae is rarely home alone.
"I do work from home, so except going to the store...we're together all the time," she wrote.
In response, Han said: "Oh thank god [because] this was so heartbreaking."
Anna Castillo added: "Get your necessities delivered! Sundae can't be feeling like this."
Sundae also made headlines earlier this month after a video of her bath time routine went viral.
In that video, which has been viewed more than 12 million times, Sundae steps into the bathtub and allows her owner to pour water over her head.
The dog even sits calmly as her owner rubs shampoo into her fur and cleans her paws.
One commenter referred to Sundae as the "calmest, most well-behaved dog I've ever seen."
